In a demonstration of community engagement, more than 600 UNC Charlotte students danced the night away recently in support of the Levine Children’s Hospital. The marathon capped a number of fundraising events across campus that raised $49,015.

UNC Charlotte senior Jameka Parker has been recognized for outstanding leadership and service by North Carolina Campus Compact, a statewide network of colleges and universities committed to community engagement. Parker is a recipient of the Community Impact Student Award, which honors one student leader at each member school.

Parker, from Fayetteville, is one of 18 students across the state to receive the 2014 award, joining more than 200 college students honored by the organization since the award was first presented in 2006.

As part of “Forty IX’ers: Know Your Title IX” series, the University will host the panel discussion “The SpeficIX: How to Get Help” at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10, in the Student Union, Room 340ABC.

The “Forty IX’ers: Know Your Title IX” series is sponsored by the UNC Charlotte Title IX Office, Center for Wellness Promotion and the Dean of Students Office, in conjunction with the Feminist Union. Its purpose is to address issues of sexual assault, stalking and relationship violence.

An alcohol-free tailgate for the Charlotte 49ers Nov. 8 football game against Coastal Carolina has been scheduled. The “Straighten Up” sober tailgate will be held at the tent in the Black parking lot from 7:30 a.m. until game time. The event is sponsored by the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC); Center for Wellness and Promotion and Foundations Recovery Network.

The tailgate, which is open to anyone who attends the game, will feature:

Rob Bates, a senior in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program, has entered the competition for the official poster of the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championship being held in Greensboro.

Jurors will select the top three submissions by Dec. 15 with the first-place entry to be the official poster design. The public can vote for the People’s Choice Award winner online, which comes with a $750 award.

The Nov. 14 Friday Night Live comedy series will feature a free, public performance by comedian Josh Blue at 7 p.m. in the Cone University Center, After Hours Lounge. The Campus Activities Board is hosting this event.

UNC Charlotte alumnus Dylan McKnight (’13M) recently received the Marvin Collins Outstanding Planning Award at the N.C. Planning Conference Awards Luncheon.

McKnight was honored in the graduate student project category for his work on the Reid Park Vision Plan, which was completed as part of his capstone project toward master’s degrees in urban design and community planning. The project involved planning and designing an 18-acre neighborhood park and greenway. The first phase is expected to break ground in January.

A leader in girls’ education, Molly Barker will present “Putting Your Passion to Work” at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 11, in the Student Union Movie Theater.

Barker founded Girls on the Run in 1996 in Charlotte. A four-time Hawaii Ironman triathlete, she used her background in social work, counseling and teaching, along with research on adolescent issues, to develop the program. Currently, there are Girls on the Run councils in more than 210 cities across North America. They reach 200,000-plus girls and women each year.

College students can experience stress brought on by academics or personal circumstances. Knowing where to turn to for support is critical.

The UNC Charlotte Counseling Center, located in Atkins Building, Room 158, offers a variety of programming to address academic, emotional, psychological and interpersonal development challenges faced by college students.

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) will host a screening of the documentary/comedy “The Muslims are Coming!” at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct.29, in the Cone University Center After Hours Lounge.

Afterward, there will be a discussion with the director and one of the comedians featured in the documentary.
