Calling all 49er ACEs

The newly formed 49er ACE (Alumni Campus Employee) group recently gathered for an end of summer reception at the Harris Alumni Center at Johnson Glen. Currently, there are more than 600 faculty and staff members who are proud UNC Charlotte alumni.

Novant’s Beth Crigler to join University Advancement

Novant Health Foundation’s Beth Crigler is joining the UNC Charlotte Division of University Advancement as associate vice chancellor for University development, effective Sept. 17. In this role, she will provide strategic vision to oversee the University’s fundraising functions, including EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte.

City Council approves funding for UNC Charlotte conference center

The Charlotte City Council voted unanimously to invest $8 million toward the completion of the Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at UNC Charlotte. This planned conference center will enable the University to bring large research symposia and academic conferences to Charlotte.

University employees encouraged to participate in Live United Day

UNC Charlotte employees are encouraged to participate in the first-ever Live United Day: All in for the Kids, a joint effort between United Way’s Hands On Charlotte, the Charlotte Chamber and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Former UNC President C.D. Spangler has died

C.D. Spangler Jr., 86, died Sunday, July 22; the Charlotte business executive served as UNC System president from 1986 to 1997. During his tenure, he oversaw the installation of UNC Charlotte Chancellor James Woodward in April 1990.

In a Charlotte Observer article, UNC President Margaret Spellings said that Spangler, also known as “Dick,” helped to “change lives and transform a state.”

Conference center and hotel would benefit the University and Charlotte

For nearly 30 years, UNC Charlotte leaders have envisioned opening a conference center and hotel on the University campus. UNC Charlotte’s exponential growth, coupled with light rail’s arrival and a burgeoning University City, marks now as the time to realize that vision.

‘Spotlight 2018’ to feature alumni, student art

The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association’s inaugural alumni and student art exhibit “Spotlight 2018” runs from Thursday, June 28, through Thursday, July 12, at C3 Lab in South End. The exhibit is being curated by a panel of UNC Charlotte alumni.

Jeanette Sims, senior director of Community Relations and University Events, recently honored her father, the late J. Bryan Sims, by endowing a Gold Rush Grant in his name.

Campus community says ‘Bon Voyage’ to Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band

On May 31, 137 members of the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band departed from campus to begin a journey to Normandy, France, where they will be the first university band from North Carolina to represent the United States at an annual commemoration of the D-Day invasion.
