Chancellor to receive CASE district award for diversity efforts
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois is the 2014-15 recipient of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District III Inclusion and Diversity Leadership Award, which recognizes an individual for his/her efforts to foster inclusion and diversity within the higher education profession, on his/her campus or in the greater community.
Since assuming the chancellorship of the University in 2005, Dubois has pursued a vision that has led to a more diversified campus population; an increasingly comprehensive and inclusive curriculum; the addition of support programming for traditionally underrepresented students, faculty and staff; and significant community-university partnerships that promote access, inclusion and equity.
“One mission for colleges and universities is to foster our students’ fullest potential. We should provide them opportunities to interact with individuals from different backgrounds and to intellectually engage them in a range of ideas and perspectives,” said Dubois. “UNC Charlotte is preparing its students to become leaders and thriving citizens in a pluralistic and multicultural society. This effort has been embraced across our campus by many individuals and departments, and the CASE District III Inclusion and Diversity Leadership Award recognizes our collective endeavors.”
Dubois and his team also have actively promoted inclusion of minority- and women-owned businesses in the University’s construction work on new facilities and building renovations and as suppliers of University goods and services.
The CASE honor will be presented formally at the District III conference in Orlando in February. CASE District III institutions are located in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The chancellor’s leadership in diversity also was recognized in 2014 with the N.C. Campus Compact Engaged Leader Award, and, in 2013, Dubois accepted the Belk Innovation in Diversity Award from the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce on behalf of the University. UNC Charlotte was the first nonprofit organization to receive this distinction.
