Gallegos elected to board of leading international education association

Joël Gallegos, assistant provost for international programs, was elected to the Board of Directors of NAFSA: Association of International Educators, widely regarded as the leading professional organization in the field of international education. He will serve a three-year term beginning January 2015 in one of three member-at-large positions.

According to Fanta Aw, NAFSA president and board chair, Gallegos’ commitment to NAFSA’s core mission and values of the organization will allow him to serve in this strategic role within the largest association of professionals committed exclusively to advancing international higher education with nearly 10,000 members in 150 countries.

Prior to his election to the board, Gallegos served as chair of the organization’s 2014 annual conference held in San Diego, Calif. The conference broke previous attendance records with more than 10,000 registrants. Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, Lisa Lewis and Senior Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Jay Raja attended, where as part of the pre-conference proceedings, the chancellor welcomed participants of the leadership symposium on international education.

In addition to his roles with NAFSA, Gallegos is a member of the Council on International Education and Exchange (CIEE) Board of Directors while serving as chair of its Academic Consortium Board. He also serves on the Board of Directors for the World Affairs Council of Charlotte, where he chairs the education committee. From 2007-12, Gallegos was chair of the UNC system’s University Council on International Programs and chair of the UNC Exchange Program advisory board.
