Queen needs shared leave

Construction scheduled near Miltimore-Wallis Center
On Monday, Sept. 17, work will begin to upgrade exterior drainage for the Miltimore-Wallis Center. Expect construction fencing, noise and equipment operation as construction efforts focus on grading, drainage and paver improvements.
Remember to exercise caution when approaching construction zones; work on this project is scheduled through Friday, Oct. 12.
Register for new Gmail interface workshops
Individuals who have not used Gmail’s new design can register for “New Gmail Interface introductory Workshops” to become familiar with changes. Starting Tuesday, Sept. 18, the new design will automatically display when employees log in to Gmail. Users will be able to toggle back to the “classic” version until Oct. 16, when the new design becomes permanent.
Alumna leading CCI NorthState mentoring program
Der Vang ’11 recently was named director of mentoring in the College of Computing and Informatics. In this role, she will oversee the NorthState CCI Mentorship Program, which was created by a gift from the communications/information technology company to EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte. The program will benefit CCI students by providing guidance on personal, social and academic matters.
Lee College’s Armando Castaneda has died
Armando Castaneda, a staff member with Mosaic Computing in the Lee College of Engineering, died Sunday, Sept. 2.
Castaneda, a technology support specialist, joined the University in 2008. A veteran in the computer industry with more than 20 years of experience, Castaneda previously worked for the Sun-Sentinel newspaper in South Florida where he was responsible for 600-plus computer users in five locations.
Communication studies professor named journal associate editor
Min Jiang, an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies, will begin a four-year tenure as associate editor of the Sage journal, Communication and the Public, in January 2019.

Trahan joins UNC Charlotte as assistant general counsel
Bradley (Brad) Trahan recently joined UNC Charlotte’s Office of Legal Affairs as assistant general counsel following a national search.
Novant’s Beth Crigler to join University Advancement
Novant Health Foundation’s Beth Crigler is joining the UNC Charlotte Division of University Advancement as associate vice chancellor for University development, effective Sept. 17. In this role, she will provide strategic vision to oversee the University’s fundraising functions, including EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte.
Campbell named associate director for EHS
Jeff Campbell is associate director for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety, effective Friday, Aug. 31.
Campbell is a safety professional with 20-plus years of experience; he comes to UNC Charlotte from Ohio University where he worked as the occupational safety officer and director of environmental health and safety. Additionally, he served as the interim associate vice president for risk management and safety.
