Contemporary films from around the world will be shown as part of the 2019 UNC Charlotte International Film Festival sponsored by the Department of Languages and Culture Studies and the language clubs.

Films from Argentina, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, Chile, Cuba, France, Germany, Haiti, Iran, Italy, Japan, Russia, Spain, Syria and the United States will be screened during this year’s festival, which will run from Monday, March 18, through Friday, April 5.

Audrey Marks, ambassador of Jamaica to the United States, will be the keynote speaker for this year’s International Women’s Day celebration, scheduled for 3:30 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Popp Martin Student Union Multipurpose Room.

The Projective Eye Gallery at UNC Charlotte Center City will host “Vessels Aplenty: The Joan Tweedy Memorial Exhibition” from Monday, March 18, through Tuesday, April 16.

At universities nationwide, homelessness is having an impact on student retention rates, which affects students’ ability to matriculate and earn a college degree.

According to the Student Assistance and Support Services (SASS) Office in the Division of Student Affairs, some UNC Charlotte students are experiencing housing insecurity, with some reporting living in their cars or couch-surfing at the homes of friends and family members.

Thirty-six new students recently joined New Student and Family Services as members of the 2019 orientation counselor team.

Yesika Sorto Andino, a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, is among the 262 students selected for Campus Compact’s 2019-20 cohort of Newman Civic Fellows.

Campus Compact is a Boston-based nonprofit organization that is working to advance the public purposes of higher education. The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year experience that emphasizes personal, professional and civic growth for student leaders who demonstrate an interest in solving public problems.

Wendy Wilson, adult education coordinator for the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, will lead a workshop on cell phone macrophotography from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 16, in the McMillan Greenhouse.

The workshop will start in the classroom as attendees will attach a macro lens to their smartphones. After practicing with the lenses, members will search for the perfect image in the Botanical Gardens. Upon returning to the classroom, participants will learn about creative photo editing.

English professor Bryn Chancellor’s award-winning novel “Sycamore” is the focus of the upcoming Personally Speaking event scheduled for Tuesday, March 26.

“Intelligent Lives,” a documentary by award-winning filmmaker Dan Habib, will have its Charlotte premiere Tuesday, March 26, at UNC Charlotte’s Cone University Center.
