History professor honored by Georgia Archives
Gregory Mixon, professor of history, recently received the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council Award for Excellence in Research Using the Holdings of Archives.

CCI students create ‘Best Social Good’ hack
A team of ethical hackers from UNC Charlotte’s College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) was recognized for devising the “Best Social Good Hack” at HackNC, an event held in collaboration with competitions at eight locations around the globe and featuring as many as 10,000 student hackers.
CCI’s team tackled the human trafficking epidemic. As an urban area with the intersection of two major interstate highways within its limits, Charlotte is particularly vulnerable to illegal trafficking of all kinds, but the rise of human trafficking is particularly distressing.

Engineering professor elected to leadership position in international organization
The members of IEEE-USA, an organizational unit of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, have elected Jim Conrad of the William States Lee College of Engineering to serve as president for 2020. Conrad, a professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, will serve as president-elect in 2019.

Sports Analytics Club partnering with Charlotte Hornets for crowdfunding campaign
The UNC Charlotte Sports Analytics Club is partnering with the Charlotte Hornets to raise money to buy GPS tracking devices for the club’s work with University athletic teams.

While that story unfolds in a variety of ways, local artisans are using public art to create narratives that tell a story and shape how Charlotte appears.

‘Our Towns’ authors to discuss their 100,000-mile journey
In 2012, James and Deborah Fallows began a years-long journey to explore America’s smaller communities, traveling by a single-engine, propeller plane. They chronicled their adventures in the book “Our Towns,” a collection of stories that depict civic and economic reinvention taking place across America.

UNC Charlotte’s Global Medical Brigades chapter providing health care to the needy
UNC Charlotte’s chapter of Global Medical Brigades is bringing medical and business help to some of the world’s neediest communities.
In May 2019, members of the chapter will travel to Panama to deliver medical supplies, assist in medical care and offer financial support to businesses there.
