Statement from UNC President Margaret Spellings on state budget
UNC President Margaret Spellings has offered the following statement on the 2016-17 state budget negotiated by the NC General Assembly’s Budget Conference Committee:
UNC Charlotte virtual hackathon to promote economic mobility
Technology can be a force to improve various aspects of a community, and UNC Charlotte is issuing a public challenge for developers to create applications or games to advance a social good.
The UNC Charlotte Data Science Initiative, through its Partnership for Social Good, is sponsoring a virtual hackathon to address economic mobility in the Queen City. Participants will compete for $10,000 in prizes, and their challenge is to create a mobile platform-based application or game that addresses this problem:
State budget to fund employee raises, enrollment growth; bill includes authorization for planned health and wellness center
State employees will get a combination of across-the-board and merit raises via the budget compromise announced late Monday night. The budget compromise will be sent to Gov. Pat McCrory for his signature this week, after being voted on by the N.C. House and Senate.
The budget includes a 1.5 percent raise and a one-time bonus equal to 0.5 percent of their annual salary for all employees. UNC campuses also will receive funding to award additional one-time bonuses to EHRA employees based upon performance.
Proper disposal of state property
Summer coincides with the annual end-of-the-year purchasing spree by some campus departments and units, and it is a time for offices to purge, replace, repurpose or recycle equipment. While most items make their way into the trash or recycle bins, University employees should exercise caution, as certain items require special handling.
Education professor keynotes inaugural Baccalaureate Service
Urban Education Professor Chance Lewis delivered the keynote address at an event this month that recognized recent minority male student graduates from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS).
The Beta Nu Lambda Education Foundation planned the inaugural Baccalaureate Service in partnership with CMS.

Nationally ranked men’s soccer team releases 2016 schedule
The Charlotte 49ers men’s soccer program, which has made two trips to the College Cup and 11 appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including five consecutive ones, will play nine teams that made the 2015 NCAA Tournament in 2016.
Circus theatre students to perform
Participants in the Department of Theatre summer Circus Theatre class will present a public showing of their work at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 29. This outdoor performance will take place on MAX, the UNC Charlotte Mobile Arts & Community Experience, on the lawn in front of Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.
New website provides info in advance of light rail’s arrival
The extension of light rail from Center City to UNC Charlotte is scheduled to begin operations in summer 2017, with two stations serving the main campus. To prepare for this transformational event, the University has launched a new informational website.
Lightrail.charlotte.edu is a campus resource for students, faculty and staff on how the Blue Line Extension will connect the University to Center City and other points along the light rail route to its southern terminus.
