Temporary closure at Cameron/Craver/Phillips intersection extended

The closing of the intersection at Cameron Boulevard with Craver and Phillips Roads to replace crosswalks has been extended to the afternoon of Monday, May 23, due to this week’s weather.

Drivers and pedestrians should expect concrete trucks and other heavy construction equipment in the area. Signage and barricades will be erected.

Individuals should stay alert and exercise caution when approaching construction areas.

N.C. House budget would fund salary increases, enrollment growth

Raises for state employees and enrollment growth funding for the UNC system are among the measures included in the N.C. House of Representatives budget, slated for a final vote May 19. The state Senate is working on its budget, which is expected to be released by May 27.

For state workers, the N.C. House budget proposes a 2 percent salary increase with a one-time $500 bonus for all employees. The UNC system would receive $31 million in funding for enrollment growth, of this, UNC Charlotte would get about $8.6 million.

Governor declares May ‘Internal Audit Month’

 Gov. Pat McCrory has designated May 2016 as “Internal Audit Month” in North Carolina in a proclamation signed April 25.

The governor’s recognition of the internal audit profession and its contributions to the state complement the activities taking place across North Carolina as audit professionals highlight their role protecting organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice and insight. 

Business student places second in innovation competition

Jonathan Rasmussen, a senior majoring in operations and supply chain management in the Belk College of Business, received $250 and second-place honors in the undergraduate division of the student competition at Innovate Carolina. This annual conference is organized by the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) Carolinas chapter.

Rasmussen’s concept is to improve public transportation through new technologies like mobile pay, smart apps and partnerships that will improve the convenience, reliability and quality of service.

Seventh class of Levine Scholars named

Twenty young leaders from high schools across the United States comprise the seventh class of UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program. They will join the University starting with the fall 2016 semester.

The University’s most prestigious merit scholarship is valued at approximately $105,000 for in-state students and $155,000 for out-of-state students. It covers full tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and summer experiences. Additional funding is provided to support community service work and professional development during the scholars’ academic years.

The Parking and Transportation Services Office (PaTS) will provide modified shuttle service during first and second summer sessions. The summer shuttle will operate internally using SafeRide evening transportation vans.

‘Pride of Niner Nation’ to be official band at France’s 2018 D-Day ceremony

The UNC Charlotte “Pride of Niner Nation” Marching Band has been selected as the official band to represent the United States in Normandy, France, in June 2018. The performance will mark the 74th anniversary of D-Day. Each year, one band is chosen to represent the United States at the D-Day commemoration. The honor was reserved historically for official military bands, but, in recent years, it has been assigned to university marching bands of distinction.

History professor receives Faculty Engagement Award

Gregory Mixon, an associate professor of history, is the recipient of the second annual J. Murrey Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award.

Presented to a UNC Charlotte faculty member who has engaged in innovative or exceptional work with library collections, programs and services, the Atkins Library Faculty Engagement Award is given in the fall. It includes a $2,500 allocation for professional development that recognizes the faculty member’s outstanding contributions to the library’s mission, vision and strategic initiatives.
