A bigger, better Belk Gym was on display Monday as campus leaders, students, faculty and staff celebrated the re-opening of a facility built in 1970.

Online graduate programs in engineering, nursing improve in rankings

In the 2016 U.S. News and World Report rankings of top online programs, the University’s graduate programs in engineering and nursing ranked no. 19 and no. 54, respectively.

Both distance education offerings moved up in this year’s rankings. In 2015, the online graduate engineering program was ranked no. 29, and the nursing program was no. 87.

U.S. News and World Report ranks its “Best Online Programs” based upon factors such as academic reputation among peer institutions, faculty credentials and admissions selectivity.

Learn how to let go of things

The Advisory Committee to the Chancellor for Employee Health and Wellness is sponsoring the lunch-and-learn program “Letting Go of the Things that Hold You Back” at noon, Thursday, Jan. 28, in the Student Union, Room 200.

A facilitator from ComPsych Guidance Resources Worldwide will lead this program. The University partners with ComPsych to provide Employee Assistance Program benefits to full-time, permanent employees.

Lunch special offered at South Village Crossing

SoVi Dining at South Village Crossing will host a one-day lunch special for faculty and staff members from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., Friday, Jan. 15. This all-you-care-to-eat lunch with beverage and dessert is $6; offer is valid with University ID.

The Green and Yellow shuttles serve the South Village Crossing area from central, north and east campus (see bus routes online).

Annual STEM Conference draws record crowd

It’s lunchtime on a Tuesday and 220 North Carolina science and math teachers are listening to a man talk about shoveling lemur poop.

Though this portion of National Geographic conservation scientist Luke Dollar’s keynote presentation may not have been the most appetizing of mealtime conversations, his larger message was lockstep with the Center for STEM Education’s mission to reshape how teachers teach and students learn those subjects.

This year’s winners of the coveted award are being recognized for their responsible energy use and for creating lasting value for their organizations and the communities they serve through a number of inventive projects.

Seventh annual ‘49ers4Life’ blood drive set for Jan. 26

UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff again will have the chance to team with the American Red Cross in a campus-wide effort to save lives. This year’s 49ers4Life blood drive, set for 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 26, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center, has a collection goal of 1,000 pints.

Cancer researcher featured in Charlotte Observer

Pinku Mukherjee, the Belk Endowed Professor of Cancer Research, was profiled recently in the Charlotte Observer. The story highlights a faculty researcher who is staking her claim at UNC Charlotte and making an exponential impact in the field of cancer research. Mukherjee is the 2015 recipient of the O. Max Gardner Award, the UNC system’s highest faculty honor.
