Thomas Lawrence Mellichamp ’70, former director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, died Sept. 12.

A professor emeritus in the Biology Department, Mellichamp retired in 2014 after nearly four decades directing the development of the University’s Botanical Gardens. He completed a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University and went on to earn a doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan before returning to join the Charlotte faculty in 1976.

UNC Charlotte is one of nine institutions to receive a $50,000 national micro-grant to fund a pilot program to prevent low-income college students from dropping out prior to graduation.

The Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) awarded $450,000 to nine public urban research institutions. Each college received $50,000.

Scholarships help to ease the financial burdens associated with college, and, sometimes, they enable students to better focus on their studies.
The UNC Charlotte Scholarship Office, under the direction of Mark Walter, is a new campus resource that will guide and support all colleges and departments that award endowed and annual scholarships.
