UNC Charlotte is an inaugural recipient of up to $1 million from the U.S. National Science Foundation’s Regional Innovation Engines, or NSF Engines, program.

UNC Charlotte’s PoleVolt, the innovative solution that uses existing streetlights to provide curbside electric vehicle charging, has added another accolade. It recently received the Clean Cities/Clean Fuels Coalition Award from the Centralina Regional Council.

Thomas Lawrence Mellichamp ’70, former director of the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens, died Sept. 12.

A professor emeritus in the Biology Department, Mellichamp retired in 2014 after nearly four decades directing the development of the University’s Botanical Gardens. He completed a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from the University and went on to earn a doctorate in botany from the University of Michigan before returning to join the Charlotte faculty in 1976.

The EPIC atrium is now the Robert E. Johnson Atrium in recognition and honor of Bob Johnson, dean emeritus of The William States Lee College of Engineering. The naming took place during a special ceremony in the Albert & Freeman Energy Production and Infrastructure Center on Thursday, March 17.

PoleVolt™, an electric vehicle charging station developed by UNC Charlotte’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Center in partnership with Duke Energy, the city of Charlotte and the Centralina Regional Council was unveiled at the Ritz at Washington Heights park.

The Duke Energy Smart Grid Laboratory located within the Albert & Freeman Energy Production and Infrastructure Center that provides faculty and students hands-on access to state-of-the-art mechanisms for advanced testing and evaluation of smart grid-enabling technologies and energy systems.

UNC Charlotte’s Energy Production and Infrastructure Center receives a $3.6 million grant to support efforts to lower solar electricity costs, increase the competitiveness of American solar manufacturing and improve grid reliability.

Sukumar Kamalasadan, Duke Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, is the principal investigator for a federally funded project to advance solar energy’s role in strengthening the resilience of the U.S. electricity grid.
