Graduate student receives national award
Third-year special education master’s student Maureen Mensing was one of two individuals honored by the National Association for Gifted Children. She received the association’s Master’s and Specialist Award for Exceptional Contributions to Gifted and Talented Education. This honor recognizes professionals who have contributed to the field in a host of manners, including through teaching, writing, advocacy, curriculum development and community service in gifted education.
Music professor’s works included on one of the year’s best jazz releases
“Clarity,” the debut album by the Unhinged Sextet and featuring Associate Professor of Music Will Campbell on alto saxophone and three original tunes by him, was named a “Best Release of 2015” by All About Jazz. The review calls the album “smoking hot … a first-class collection of modern jazz, with strong playing and exciting, varied original compositions.”
Faces – Helena Connors
Reliable, trustworthy and safe – important concepts in the field of transportation, and Helena Connors is focused daily on achieving these benchmarks.
As UNC Charlotte’s transportation manager, Connors oversees the University’s arrangement with CATS, the daytime and evening SafeRide program, the Zipcar rental program and other efforts to move students, faculty and staff around campus.
“Every day is different,” said Connors. “We’re constantly exploring ways to improve our current services, and we’re researching new programs, such as a bike-share offering.”
Ribarsky named to senior IEEE publications position
William Ribarsky, Bank of America Endowed Chair in Information Technology in the College of Computing and Informatics, was named chair of the IEEE Computer Society Transactions Operations Committee and member of the society’s Publications Board.
Celebrate the re-opening of Belk Gym
A formal event to mark the re-opening of the Belk Gym is scheduled for 3 p.m., Jan. 11, on the facility’s front patio.
Distance Education Testing Center moves to larger space
The exponential growth in the University’s distance education offerings and enrollment necessitated creating a larger testing center.
The Distance Education Testing Center recently moved to the Barnard Building with space to accommodate 23 students with individual testing carrels.
CHHS convenes teen empowerment summit
Teenagers from across the region gathered recently at the UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services to learn how to make informed decisions about their health and relationships, and how technology they may take for granted can help them along the way.
The Department of Public Health Sciences partnered with the outreach organization I Am My Sister to offer the “I Am Teen Empowerment Summit” for a third straight year.
Counseling professors to guest on Dec. 18 ‘Live Wire’
Sejal Foxx, associate professor and director of the School Counseling program, and Clare Merlin, assistant professor of counseling, will be the guests on the Dec. 18 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at noon, they will discuss how school counseling has changed and where they see the profession going and why it matters in today’s turbulent times.
University initiatives enhance safety on and off campus
Proactive steps by UNC Charlotte to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff have proven effective on campus and off campus. While crime is very low on campus, the University launched two initiatives aimed at further boosting security.
