The College of Education’s John Beattie is among the five finalists for one of UNC Charlotte’s top honors – the 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.

Nearly 550 new international students have begun their studies at UNC Charlotte, making this year’s class of incoming learners the University’s largest global contingent to enroll at the start of any semester.

In total, the University is hosting about 1,900 international students who are pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees or who are here for shorter cultural exchanges that is in addition to language training students. This places UNC Charlotte among the top 125 institutions in the United States in terms of international student enrollment.

Kerr Putney, chief of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and Kami Chavis Simmons, a professor at the Wake Forest School of Law, will examine police use of force and other policing, civil rights and race issues at UNC Charlotte’s annual Constitution Day celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Jaime Bochantin, assistant professor of communications and organizational science, and Karen Ward, assistant director of executive education, will be the guests on the Sept. 3 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast.

Starting at 2 p.m., Thursday, they will discuss the University’s programs for executives and senior leaders; these offerings provide executives with the latest knowledge and research that they can apply directly to their companies.

The Center for STEM Education will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the College of Education, Suite 222.

Attendees can meet center staff and educational collaborators and learn more about the center’s programs. Light refreshments will be served.

Social work professor Annelise Mennicke has earned a leadership and service award from a respected national organization in the field. She is the recipient of the 2015 student award for leadership and service from the Group of the Advancement of Doctoral Education in Social Work (GADE).

The Music Department’s 2015-16 Faculty and Friends Concert Series opens on Tuesday, Sept.15, with a performance by Assistant Professor Carl DuPont, bass-baritone, and Associate Professor Mira Frisch, cellist. Fellow music faculty member Brian Arreola and Gregory Thompson, associate professor of music at Winston-Salem State University, will provide accompaniment.

With the start of another academic year, new faculty members can be overwhelmed by their teaching, research and scholarly responsibilities, all of which are being conducted in an unfamiliar environment. This is the perfect time for new faculty to participate in the ADVANCE Faculty Affairs and Diversity (FADO) New Faculty Mentoring program.

Scott Kissau, an associate professor of foreign language education in the Department of Middle, Secondary, and K-12 Education, was named Foreign Language Teacher of the Year in higher education by the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina.

“Dr. Kissau distinguished himself from the other candidates by immersing himself in the education of languages and cultures and by demonstrating his in-depth involvement with growing and supporting world language teachers,” said Foreign Language Association of North Carolina (FLANC) Awards Chair Delynda Ramirez-Carter.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the White House,” featuring noted journalist Carl Bernstein and political satirist P.J. O’Rourke, will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.

In this free presentation for the campus community, the two writers will offer their perspectives on government, politics and the inner-workings of Washington, D.C.
