LiveSafe mobile app topic for Aug. 27 ‘Live Wire’
Jeff Baker, chief of the UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety Department, and Lt. Brian Thomas will be guests on the Aug. 27 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at 2 p.m., Thursday, they will discuss LiveSafe, a free mobile device application for UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff to instantly share safety and security concerns PPS. Students and employees can download the free app on their smart phones and tablets through iTunes and Google Play.
University officer injured foiling thief who preyed on campus
A UNC Charlotte police officer is being hailed as a hero for chasing down a larceny suspect and sustaining a serious head injury just before the individual was apprehended.
Officer Kasey Lowe was injured on Monday, Aug. 24, while chasing a subject who was suspected of stealing laptops, wallets and other personal items from students, faculty and staff in two campus academic buildings, said UNC Charlotte police chief Jeff Baker.
Lowe was on patrol when she spotted the suspect on the UNC Charlotte campus. She immediately gave chase on foot, Baker said.
WOW celebrates new academic year and #NinerPride
Week of Welcome (WOW) is an annual tradition and helps the University kick off the academic year with opportunities for social engagement and campus involvement. More than 60 events will take place between Friday, Aug. 21, and Sunday, Aug. 30.
The focus of WOW is to celebrate #NinerPride and welcome all new and returning students to campus and will offer various opportunities for engagement within the UNC Charlotte community, said Emily Jensen, associate director for new student services and family services in the Division for Student Affairs.

Communication studies faculty member named Cone Early-Career Professor
Margaret Quinlan, associate professor of communication studies, received the Bonnie Cone Early-Career Professorship during the University Convocation, Thursday, Aug. 20.
A three-year appointment, the Cone Early-Career Professorship for Teaching recognizes a recently tenured professor who embodies Bonnie Cone’s tenacious commitment to providing UNC Charlotte undergraduate and graduate students with enriching, high-quality educational experiences. The recipient is nominated by a dean or department chair and selected by a faculty committee of award-winning teachers.
Rowe Galleries to host display of alumni artwork
“Verve: The 2015 Alumni Biennial Exhibition,” featuring work by Brandon Boan, Alexandra Giannell, Bradlee Hicks, Zipporah Camille Thompson, Antoine Williams and Ashley York, will open Tuesday, Sept. 1, in the Rowe Galleries. It will be displayed through Friday, Sept. 25.
Charlotte 49ers ‘Uptown Live’ coaches’ show returns to Blackfinn Ameripub
The “49ers Uptown Live,” the official coaches’ show, will again broadcast from Blackfinn Ameripub, located in the Epicentre in Uptown Charlotte. The first show of the 2015-16 school year will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31.
Hosted by Matt Swierad, “49ers Uptown Live” will feature weekly appearances by head football coach Brad Lambert or men’s head basketball coach Mark Price, along with guest appearances by other coaches, players and Athletic Department officials. Swierad is the voice of the 49ers for football and basketball.
Roadway, construction projects to greet students, returning faculty
The start of the fall 2015 semester is approaching, and University officials advise students and returning faculty to pay close attention to several transportation and construction upgrades, that, until completed, could result in disruptions navigating the UNC Charlotte campus.
Nearly 5,700 students will move into residence halls starting Friday, Aug. 21. Students, faculty and staff members should anticipate more traffic and plan accordingly when entering or exiting campus, especially on Friday. Campus police will direct traffic on Friday and Saturday.
Charlotte Engineering Early College a big draw, waitlist tops 350
While classes don’t start at UNC Charlotte until Aug. 24, there’s already a buzz of activity in the classrooms and hallways at the Charlotte Engineering Early College (CEEC) high school.
Distinct from its peers in one of the state’s largest public school districts, CEEC welcomed its second class of ninth-graders on Aug. 6, along with a handful of sophomore transfers from across Mecklenburg County.
Back-to-back ‘Live Wire’ segments scheduled for Aug. 20
Starting at 2 p.m., Aug. 20, “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast, will feature two programs. In the first segment, Bret Wood, clinical coordinator in the University’s athletic training program, will explain why one of the most dangerous injuries athletes face also can be one of the most complex to diagnose and manage.
