Professor receives NEA grant to bridge Indian dance techniques
Kaustavi Sarkar, assistant professor of dance, has received a $10,000 “Grant for Arts Projects — Dance” from the National Endowment for the Arts” for the project, “ShilpaNatyam: Creating a New Vocabulary in Indian Dance,” in partnership with New York-based choreographer Maya Kulkarni.
Architecture research fellow wins dissertation award
Elena Vazquez Pena, a research fellow in technology and design in the David R. Ravin School of Architecture, won the 2023 Architectural Research Centers Consortium Dissertation Award.
Dave Verrill named to national committee
Dave Verrill, a lecturer in the Department of Applied Physiology, Health, and Clinical Sciences, recently was elected academician for clinical exercise testing and prescription by the American College of Sports Medicine Committee on Certification and Registry Boards.

Charlotte 49ers unveil updated mobile app
The Charlotte 49ers have launched an updated mobile app to allow Niner Nation to stay connected with the program’s 19 varsity sports. The mobile app is powered by SIDEARM Sports.
Voice professor to perform with Opera Carolina, releases album
Sequina DuBose, assistant professor of voice, will sing the role of Clara in the Opera Carolina production of George Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” Performances will take place Jan. 22-28 at the Belk Theater in the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.
She also recently released her debut album, “Blurred Lines: 21st Century Hybrid Vocal Literature.”
Emily Keck receives C-USA Spirit of Service Award
Charlotte women’s soccer goalkeeper Emily Keck was recognized with Conference USA’s Spirit of Service Award for the fall season.
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award recognizes the community service efforts of the league’s student-athletes. Conference USA awards the honor three times during the school year, after each of the fall, winter and spring sports seasons.
Keck was chosen as Charlotte’s representative for women’s soccer this fall and won the honor with her community service, good academic standing and participation on the soccer team.
