Political Science researcher receives Harshini V. De Silva Award
Suzanne Leland, a core faculty member of the Public Policy Ph.D. program and professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, is the 2020 recipient of the Harshini V. de Silva Graduate Mentor Award.

Charlotte 49ers send record three players to NFL Combine
A school-record three Charlotte 49ers have been invited to the 2020 NFL Combine, taking place at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Offensive lineman Cameron Clark, defensive end Alex Highsmith and running back Benny LeMay all earned invites after leading Charlotte to its best season ever and the school’s first bowl appearance.

Amy Wartham, director of corporate training at UNC Charlotte, and alumnae Sallie Jarosz ’82, Cristi Lewis ’96 and Angelica Srivoraphan ’10 were among the individuals honored at this year’s Charlotte Business Journal (CBJ) Women in Business Awards event held Tuesday, Feb. 24.This annual awards program, now in its 24th year, honors 25 outstanding businesswomen from the region who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities in the past year.

Education professor elected president of national organization
The Cato College of Education continues to broaden its influence nationally with the selection of Tina Heafner as president of the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS).Heafner, a professor in the Department of Middle, Secondary and K-12 Education, is a longtime member of NCSS and has held a number of roles and elected positions.
Charlotte Teachers Institute to hold seminar info session
The Charlotte Teachers Institute (CTI) will host an information session from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, at Johnson C. Smith University Library.During this event, attendees will learn about the eight 2020 seminars created for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) students. UNC Charlotte and Johnson C. Smith University faculty members work with CMS teachers to develop these new curricula for their students.

Slavery, human trafficking topic of Great Decisions
John Cox, associate professor of Global Studies and History will be the final speaker of the 2020 Great Decisions Lecture Series. His presentation, scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, at International House, will touch upon Ronald Weitzer’s article “Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking.”Great Decisions talks focus on topics selected by the Foreign Policy Association. Addressing slavery and human trafficking, Weitzer wrote about how billions of dollars have been allocated to curbing human trafficking and slavery and how the international community can combat them.
University moving to Condition 1 at 1 p.m., Feb. 20
As a result of expected adverse winter weather, the University will move to Condition 1 (reduced operations) effective 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, until 11 a.m., Friday, Feb. 21.
