John Connaughton, Barings Professor of Financial Economics in UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business, stated the nation and state’s economic growth will continue in 2020.

Two infants unearthed in ancient burial mounds in Salango, Ecuador, were buried wearing helmets crafted from the skulls of other children, in what researchers believe was a unique practice perhaps intended to protect the infants’ souls during their journey to the afterlife.“This has literally not been seen before, to our knowledge. We think this is a totally novel burial practice,” said bioarchaeologist Sara Juengst, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at UNC Charlotte.

Unemployment significantly increases the odds of men entering jobs traditionally held by women. And, according to new research, some men experience advantages such as earning higher wages and enjoying increased occupational prestige versus previous employment.

Assistant Professor of Architecture Rachel Dickey and School of Architecture alumni Ali Karduni ’17 M.S./M.Arch.  and Noushin Radnia ’18 M.S./M.Arch. have received a 2020 Architectural Research Centers Consortium (ARCC) Research Incentive Award for their proposal, “Reconfigurable Space: Kinematic Environments Controlled with Computer Vision.”

UNC Charlotte Anthropology professor Nicole Peterson has conducted research on the topic of food insecurity within the greater Charlotte area. But when the Jamil Niner Student Pantry opened on campus in 2014, Peterson decided to conduct her research closer to home. She has worked in conjunction with pantry staff to determine the depths of the food insecurity problem on the UNC Charlotte campus. 

UNC Charlotte’s Research and Economic Development is co-presenting “The Future of Work and Workforce.” This research and community partners celebration is scheduled for 4:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 5, at PORTAL, and will feature guest speaker Jennifer Gresham, who will present “Rising Tides: Rethinking Education in an Age of Uncertainty.”

For decades, the color blue has been a significant focus of research into improvements in digital display technology. The images seen on laptops, phones and flat-screen TVs come from light-emitting materials comprising three colors: red, green and blue. 

A $1.83 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will allow UNC Charlotte researcher Rebekah Rogers to continue her focus on complex genetic mutations, which are important in the study of autism, cancer, immune disorders and reproductive disorders.

New research co-led by UNC Charlotte public health associate professor Robert Cramer is providing insights into important factors related to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Cramer and colleagues used data from a cross-national study of suicide among young adults aged 18–34 from the United States and United Kingdom.

A new grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will allow UNC Charlotte social work professor Annelise Mennicke to investigate the effectiveness of a national violence prevention program while receiving valuable mentorship and professional development in the process.
