Edmonds joins Charlotte 49ers football staff
Ulrick Edmonds is the outside linebackers coach for the Charlotte 49ers football team. Edmonds, who served as the quality control director for N.C. State’s football program for the past two years, was a long-time assistant at James Madison University, his alma mater. He also had a short stint as linebackers coach at Old Dominion University.
“Coach Edmonds is the kind of man we want leading our young men,” said head coach Brad Lambert, whose 49ers prepare for a second season at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA. “He’s an experienced coach that’s been around a lot of winning football. We’re really excited he’s decided to be a 49er.”
Edmonds went to N.C. State from Old Dominion, where he served as linebackers coach for seven months, which included the spring 2014 season. He spent 10 years at James Madison from 2004-13, where he was tight ends coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator. He was part of the Dukes’ staff during their 2004 FCS National Championship season and helped the Dukes to five playoff berths. He coached eight all-conference running backs and assisted on special teams.
A four-year letter-winner, Edmonds was a defensive lineman for James Madison from 1997 to 2000 and began his coaching career as a defensive assistant, there, in 2001. He had 154 career tackles and 6.5 sacks and was twice named all-Atlantic 10.
“He brings great experience on both sides of the ball,” Lambert added. “He’s coached on offense and played defense so he has a broad background from a football standpoint. He’s also a strong recruiter who will be valuable to our program from a recruiting standpoint. Most importantly, he’s the type of person we want leading our young men.”
Edmonds earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in criminal justice and a master’s degree in counseling psychology with a concentration in college student personnel administration. He replaces Napoleon Sykes, who was the 49ers outside linebackers coach for the program’s first three years. Sykes returned to Navy as defensive line coach after the 2015 season.
