Charlotte 49ers spring football game slated for Saturday
The Charlotte 49ers will hold the fourth annual Green-White Spring Football Game at 7 p.m., Saturday, April 23, at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The game, which marks the end of the spring 2016 practice season, is open to the public.
Head coach Brad Lambert returns 17 starters, including 2015 second team all-Conference USA selections Larry Ogunjobi and Kalif Phillips. Ogunjobi, a redshirt senior defensive lineman who has started all 34 games in program history, is the 49ers all-time leader in sacks and tackles for loss. Phillips, a senior running back, holds the 49ers record for rushing yards and touchdowns. Ogunjobi ranked second in C-USA with 14.5 TFL last year, and Phillips was the league’s fifth-best rusher.
The 49ers senior class includes 21 players that have been with the program since day one. That group, charged with establishing the program’s foundation, practiced throughout the 2012 season on the practice fields as construction was completed on the nearby stadium. They took the field in 2013 and helped usher in the FBS era in 2015. That group includes returning starters Ogunjobi, DL Brandon Banks, LB Daquan Lucas, DB Terrance Winchester, QB Lee McNeill, WR Austin Duke, OL Jamal Covington, OL Thomas La Bianca and OL Casey Perry.
In 2016, the 49ers will compete at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA for the second year. The 49ers will open the 2016 season at Louisville, Thursday, Sept. 1. The 49ers first home game will be Sept. 10 against Elon University.
Individual tickets for the April 23 game are available for $10. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. This year’s event includes the Green-White scrimmage, a team autograph session on the field, a fan field goal challenge after the game, the Junior Niner bounce-house and many other family-friendly activities.
Parking for the spring game is free and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Fans are encouraged to park in Gold Lot 23, Black Lot 18 and 19, Green CRI 2 Lot, Green CRI 3 Lot and Orange CRI Deck. Grilling is not permitted in parking decks.
