Langford named assistant football coach
Tommy Langford is joining Charlotte 49ers football as nickelback coach. Langford comes to the 49ers from Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, where he led the Greenies to the 2018 NCISAA Division I state championship game.
Langford was hired at Christ School as an assistant in 2017 before taking over as head coach for the 2018 season. The Greenies went 10-2, this past season and finished as state runners-up following a 43-14 loss to Charlotte Christian in the title game. In 2017, he was special teams coordinator, strength and speed coordinator and linebackers and quarterbacks coach. He was head coach of the North Carolina All-Stars at the 2018 Border Bowl.
“We developed a relationship with Tommy through the recruiting cycle and really enjoyed getting a chance to meet him and get to know him,” said head football coach Will Healy. “He’s an excellent football coach who has some great experiences. He’s able to build really good relationships with his players, and he has a wonderful family. I hate the timing for Christ School, but I knew he was a no-brainer and a great fit for our staff.”
Prior to his time at Christ School, Langford was at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, for four years. While there, he held roles as interim defensive coordinator, linebackers coach, defensive backs coach and special teams assistant. He also was the lead linebackers coach for Under Armour’s All-American Underclassmen Combine in 2014 and personally coordinated the NFL Combine and Pro Day workouts for current Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen.
“My family and I could not be more excited to be coming to Charlotte,” Langford said. “This is the only job that could have pulled me from the guys at Christ School. Coach Healy and his staff are exactly the kind of people I want to work with, and I’m looking forward to helping them build something special.”
A 2015 graduate of Minnesota State University, Langford was a student assistant football coach there in 2010 and a volunteer strength and conditioning coach in 2012.
