Veterans Park formally opens on campus
On Veterans Day 2019, the University recognized military veterans for their service and officially opened Veterans Park, which honors UNC Charlotte community members past and present who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
“Our University has a strong tie to the military, as it began in 1946 as a small educational center serving veterans returning from World War II,” said Christine Reed Davis, dean of students, speaking at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “More than 70 years ago, 278 student veterans utilizing G.I. Bill benefits began to write the story of what would become UNC Charlotte.
“The presence of this park on our campus is a physical symbol to both our institutional history and continued commitment to serve our student veterans. I hope this park will be a regular reminder to our entire community of the dedicated service performed by fellow 49ers to protect our freedoms,” she added.
The park is located beside Memorial Hall, which houses the University’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs.
