Chancellor and Lisa Lewis Dubois recognized for commitment to Charlotte
UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and First Lady Lisa Lewis Dubois were honored recently by Mayor Vi Lyles for their leadership, dedication and service to the city of Charlotte.
Chancellor Dubois received the Mayor’s Citizen Award, named in honor of Harvey B. Gantt, at the Charlotte City Council meeting Monday, Dec. 2. The award, presented by Lyles, honors citizens who have demonstrated courage and civility.
“Chancellor Dubois’ professional influence has bolstered the University that we all want to have in our city. He also has set a bond with the city that is solid and strong,” said Lyles. “We all watched as you displayed steadfast stability, courage and compassion during the tragic campus shooting in April of 2019. Your strength and fortitude provided support to countless others who felt the heartbreak of that evening. Thank you for being chancellor of our university and for being someone who leads with courage and civility.”
Dubois said, “I am honored to receive this award and proud of the strong partnership UNC Charlotte and the city have built together over time to meet the growing needs of the region. It has been my privilege to lead North Carolina’s only urban research university in its commitment to addressing the economic, educational, environmental, health and social needs of the Charlotte region.”
Lisa Lewis Dubois was presented with a citation from the mayor proclaiming Dec. 3, 2019, as “Lisa Lewis Dubois Day.” The recognition occurred during the annual Ladies Holiday Luncheon on campus, hosted by Dubois, which collects toys for Kids First of the Carolinas and food for UNC Charlotte’s Jamil Niner Student Pantry.
“In her time as first lady, Lisa Lewis Dubois has brought warmth, grace and passion to her important role at UNC Charlotte,” said Lyles. “She has been a dedicated and effective community leader and a role model and inspiration to UNC Charlotte students and young alumni and has been instrumental in UNC Charlotte’s extraordinary transformation into a research university with nearly 30,000 students.”
