Verburg named director of athletic academic center
Mark Verburg is director of the 49ers Athletic Academic Center (AAC). Verburg, who is in his 19th year with the University, had served as the AAC associate director since 2012.
“I am grateful and honored to become the director of the Athletic Academic Center and to continue my career serving 49er student-athletes,” Verburg said. “I’d like to thank Associate Dean for Advising and Graduation Lisa Walker, Athletics Director Mike Hill and Executive Associate Athletic Director Ragean Hill for entrusting me with this role. I’m excited to lead a staff of committed professionals who share my passion for assisting student-athletes reach their academic potential and ultimately graduate from this incredible institution.”
Verburg has advised every 49ers sport including assisting with the historic addition of new programs such as football and women’s golf. Additionally, he served as tutor coordinator from 2012-16 and coordinated the Life Skills program and the department’s community service efforts from 2002-12. Currently, he advises men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s golf, women’s golf and softball. He began his 49ers career as Charlotte’s marketing and compliance intern in 2001-02.
A 1999 business management graduate from the University of Missouri, Verburg earned a Master of Education in Sport Management from the University of Georgia in 2001 and a Master of Liberal Studies from UNC Charlotte in 2010. He is currently a doctoral student in educational leadership in the Cato College of Education.
