UNC Charlotte leaders named to Who’s Who in Black Charlotte
Five members of UNC Charlotte’s faculty or staff have been named to Who’s Who in Black Charlotte. An entity of Real Times Media, Who’s Who in Black Charlotte documents the positive achievements of Black Charlotteans who are making outstanding contributions to the communities and organizations they serve.
“The city of Charlotte is fortunate to be home to a rich array of deeply qualified leaders whose knowledge and commitment to excellence contribute to making the Queen City a great place to live and work,” said Rhonda Caldwell ’92, president and chief event officer for The Main Event Inc. and associate publisher of Who’s Who in Black Charlotte. “I’m especially proud of the scope of work UNC Charlotte leaders are directing; their high personal and professional standards provide an example for all of us to emulate.”
Those honored on Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Mint Museum’s uptown location are:
Kevin W. Bailey, Ph.D., vice chancellor for student affairs
Bailey provides leadership for student success initiatives focused on health and well-being, on- and off-campus living partnerships, student advocacy and compliance, student facility management, program assessment and student engagement. He supports campus programs addressing food insecurity, emergency housing, financial literacy, and equity and justice training for staff. Bailey serves as the chief student advocate, working to ensure that a diversity of student perspectives are considered in the University’s governance structure, policy development and strategic change process.
Kim Bradley, chief of staff, Office of the Chancellor
Bradley oversees the daily operations of the Office of the Chancellor and is responsible for planning, organizing and guiding strategic initiatives and activities of the chancellor as they relate to the internal operations of the University. She is a member of the Chancellor’s Cabinet and serves as the assistant secretary of the Board of Trustees and is responsible for supporting the board in its governance of the University.
Malcolm Butler, Ph.D., professor and dean, Cato College of Education
Butler joined UNC Charlotte in 2022 to lead the Cato College of Education, a recognized pacesetter in educational equity. The college’s mission is to prepare highly effective and ethical education professionals whose work positively impacts the people and organizations they serve in urban, rural and other diverse settings. Since his arrival, Cato College has received transformational support from the Mebane Foundation to continue its legacy of supporting innovation in literacy education in North Carolina and beyond through a five-year grant and potential endowment of up to $23 million.
Deidra Harris-Lumpkin, PHR, SHRM-CP, associate vice chancellor for human resources and university affirmative action officer
Harris-Lumpkins, who joined the University’s Division of Business Affairs in 2023, oversees recruitment and employment, staff engagement and retention, position classification and salary administration, employee relations, professional learning and development, benefits administration, human resources information systems and on-campus student employment. In addition, she regularly addresses issues related to continuous process improvement, strategic planning and analyses, employment law compliance, and staff leadership and development.
Brandon L. Wolfe, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for diversity and inclusion and chief diversity officer
Wolfe, the University’s inaugural chief diversity officer, directs the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to provide a framework for campus-wide inclusive excellence goals, projects, events and activities. In collaboration with campus partners, the office organizes D&I learning opportunities for faculty, staff and students, provides direction for honoring heritage observances reflective of the University’s population and offers opportunities for the campus community to advance related efforts through support for inclusive excellence projects, among other projects.
In addition, Byron White, Ph.D, was honored as one of 10 individuals spotlighted in Who’s Who in Black Charlotte’s eighth edition among its designated “Interesting Personalities.” White serves as associate provost for urban research and community engagement, leading urbanCORE (Community-Oriented Research and Engagement), a part of UNC Charlotte’s engaged scholarship ecosystem. urbanCORE assesses and advances efforts that connect the University’s interdisciplinary research resources to community assets to co-produce transformative solutions to societal issues. He is also an appointed professor of practice in the Department of Communication Studies.
