10 retiring faculty members honored for service

Ten faculty members whose combined service to the University totaled 194 years were honored at an annual event Thursday, April 28, at the Harris Alumni Center. They will enter the ranks of retired faculty at the end of the spring semester.

University leaders noted that each of the retirees had made important contributions in shaping the institution and strengthening its reputation in the region, around the state and across the country.

Levine Hall taking shape

Construction continues on Levine Hall near the main entrance to campus.  Named in honor of Sandra and Leon Levine, the residence hall, when completed later this year, will house more than 400 students, as well as the administrative offices for the Honors College and the Levine Scholars Program.

Journalist, former Levine Museum director to receive honorary degrees at commencement

Charlotte Observer journalist Fannie Flono and Emily Zimmern, former president of the Levine Museum of the New South, will receive honorary doctorates during UNC Charlotte’s May commencement. The University will hold three ceremonies to bestow undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees upon approximately 4,390 students.

‘City Walks’ will connect neighborhoods across Charlotte

More groups of people will be out walking through Charlotte neighborhoods during May, telling stories and sharing experiences about the places they live, as part of the “City Walks” initiative.

Outstanding undergraduates acknowledged at Honors College ceremony

Competing for top national and international academic scholarships is a team effort, and the Honors College recently recognized endorsed candidates for these awards and other grants.

Biology major Heidi Cope was recognized for receiving a research Fulbright grant to India, where she will investigate the intersections of marriage culture and the sexual health of adolescent women; Diane Zablotsky from the Levine Scholars Program was her program director.

Canvas selected as University’s new learning management system

UNC Charlotte is transitioning to a new learning management system, Canvas; its adoption resulted after several months of study, including a pilot phase that involved more than 100 courses in 20 disciplines and 3,000 students.

UNC Charlotte a top 10 ‘best value’ in North Carolina

SmartAsset recently released its 2016 listing of North Carolina’s “Best Value Colleges,” and UNC Charlotte again came in the top 10.

The University held on to its sixth-place ranking on the list ahead of Davidson College, Appalachian State University, Campbell University and Wake Forest University.

New certificate program for early childhood mental health

The School of Social Work and Department of Special Education and Child Development announce the approval of a joint certificate program in early childhood mental health (ECMH). This program, which requires 15 graduate hours, focuses on children birth to five years of age and their families.

27 finalists competing at 15th annual Charlotte Venture Challenge

The 15th annual Charlotte Venture Challenge, which will be held, Tuesday, April 19, at the North Carolina Research Campus, will showcase 27 startup finalists to investors, corporate innovation executives and the business community.

In addition to presentations by the startups, Chis Heivly, cofounder of MapQuest, will deliver a keynote presentation, and there will be updates from alumni who participated in past challenges. Register to attend this year’s celebration online.

EPIC to hold ‘Reinventing the Power Industry’
