Cato College of Education

The UNC Charlotte Cato College of Education has received the 2018 Yachad Award from the Levine Jewish Community Center for the college’s work in support of the city of Charlotte. The award recognizes UNC Charlotte and the center’s collaborative work on a summer camp designed to help struggling students improve their reading while enjoying the fun and games of traditional summer camps.

Cato College of Education professor Joan Lachance and a colleague have authored a new publication that will provide educator preparation programs with a set of standards to guide dual language teacher preparation across the county.

The National Dual Language Education Teacher Preparation Standards (NDLETPS) aim to support federal, state and local stakeholders who prepare dual language educators for the linguistic, cultural and ideological depth of working in K-12 and potentially K-16 dual language programs.

UNC Charlotte has received a $750,000 grant to help attract and support military veterans in earning graduate degrees in STEM disciplines, with particular emphasis on advanced degrees in mechanical engineering.

UNC Charlotte’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, the international honor society in education, has continued an award-winning streak with a pair of honors at the 52nd Kappa Delta Pi Convocation. KDP received the Program Award for Professional Development and Literacy Alive Bronze Award, recognizing the impactful programming and service provided by the chapter during the last two years.

The Wall Street Journal has described Barbara Oakley’s research as revolutionary. A best-selling author, educator and engineer, Oakley will share the secrets of neuroscience to unlock the brain’s power for maximum learning during a UNC Charlotte presentation for faculty, staff and students.

Moises Serrano-Cruz, an openly gay and undocumented activist and storyteller, will deliver the annual Bob Barret Distinguished Lecture on Multiculturalism at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Cato College of Education, Room 010. The talk is the keynote presentation for the Multicultural Issues in Counseling Conference, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2.

Krystal Turner, a graduate assistant in the Graduate School, recently participated in the annual conference of the Association of Play Therapy (APT) in Phoenix where she helped promote graduate education at UNC Charlotte and presented the research project “Child/Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) for Adoptive Families: Parents’ Lived Experiences.”
