Local, state officials attend CEEC ribbon-cutting ceremony

UNC Charlotte recently hosted a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Charlotte Engineering Early College (CEEC); the event coincided with on-campus meetings by the N.C. State Board of Education.

University, local and state leaders talked about how the CEEC was an example of innovative, educational concepts that have increased in popularity across North Carolina.

Burgess joins UNC Charlotte as director of University compliance

Susan Burgess is director of University compliance, a new position that is responsible for the development, implementation, operation and oversight of an enterprise-wide program to ensure the institution’s adherence to its legal, ethical and regulatory obligations.

Innovation agent Charles Best to speak

Charles Best, founder and CEO of DonorsChoose.org, will deliver a presentation at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
Named to Fortune magazine’s “40 Under 40 Hottest Rising Stars in Business” for three consecutive years, Best is considered a pioneer in citizen philanthropy. A former history teacher in the Bronx, Best created the nonprofit DonorsChoose.org as a simple way to address educational inequality. At the website, public school teachers could create classroom project requests, and donors could pick the projects they wanted to support.

Dubois to appear on WTVI program

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois was interviewed for the program “Job Ready” that will be broadcast at 9:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 23, on WTVI PBS Charlotte (Time Warner Cable Channel 5). Heath Morrison, superintendent of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is also a guest on the show, hosted by Tony Zeiss.
“Job Ready” focuses on emerging workforce trends in the Charlotte region and identifies available career options and resources.

Office of Legal Affairs Symposium set for Oct. 16

Understanding sexual assault, FERPA, the Public Records Act and Title IX are among the topics to be discussed at the fall 2014 Office of Legal Affairs Symposium, scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.
Faculty or staff members who are interested in attending the symposium should email Melanie White, executive assistant to the vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel, at melaniewhite@uncc.edu.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

First Ward Park to serve as community centerpiece

First Ward Park is being designed as a community centerpiece – it will be bordered by UNC Charlotte Center City and ImaginOn. At a Sept. 18 ceremony to break ground officially for the park, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois said the park always has been part of Daniel Levine and the University’s vision for First Ward.

Annual Staff Council Fall Festival set for Oct. 7

Food, contests, fun and games are on tap for the annual Staff Council Fall Festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.
The festival is a free event; however, staff members should bring their UNC Charlotte ID for the BBQ luncheon.
Employees can compete to win prizes in the Fall Festival Bake-off and Photography contests; winners will be announced at noon. Rules and entry forms are on the Staff Council website; the deadline to register is Thursday, Oct. 2.

Groundbreaking for First Ward Park scheduled

UNC Charlotte Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Executive Director of UNC Charlotte Center City Jerry Coughter, along with city, county and local business leaders, will participate in groundbreaking ceremonies for the planned First Ward Park at 2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 18, at the corner of Brevard and 9th streets.
The event is open to the University community and will include music and refreshments.

2014 Chancellor’s Reception scheduled for Oct. 14

The Chancellor’s Reception, part of the University’s staff recognition program, is held to express appreciation to staff and faculty members, and it is an opportunity to socialize and network with colleagues.
This annual event, which is hosted by Chancellor Philip L. Dubois, will be from 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Student Union Multipurpose Room. Light hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served.

Chancellor speaks about economic development in Union County

Chancellor Philip L. Dubois was the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Hook and Slice Industry Appreciation Banquet presented by Monroe-Union County Economic Development on Thursday, Sept. 4.  In his remarks to an audience of about 100 industry leaders in Union County, Dubois emphasized UNC Charlotte’s shared goals of economic prosperity and other connections with Union County. He met a number of local elected officials including Monroe Mayor Bobby Kilgore, industry leaders and many alumni who are making a difference in Union County.
