Two design projects receive I-Corp grants
The School of Architecture’s Integrated Design Research Lab (IDRL) has received two National Science Foundation I-Corps grants for additional research of microalgae facades and adaptable solar windows. Each project will receive $50,000 and specialized team training to develop the commercial potential of the technology.

Alum’s quartet wins national competition
The Aruna Quartet, a saxophone group that includes UNC Charlotte alumnus Andrew Schoen, won the Grand Prize in the 46th annual Fischoff Competition. Hosted by the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association, the competition is the largest chamber music competition in the United States. The Grand Prize-winning ensemble receives $13,500, a winner’s tour of the Midwestern United States and select appearances at the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy this summer.

View ‘A Glass Rhinoceros’
The spring 2019 Mixed-Media/Print Media 3 studio art class recently completed a site-specific installation in the front window case at UNC Charlotte Center City. The colorful mixed-media work, “A Glass Rhinoceros,” explores concepts of movement, transformation and perception and was inspired by two works of literature: Eugène Ionesco’s play, “Rhinoceros,” and Paul Auster’s novella, “City of Glass.”

Director of School of Architecture stepping down
Chris Jarrett, who has served as the director of the School of Architecture (SoA) for 10 years, will step down from that position on June 30 and join the architecture faculty full-time.

Department of Dance to host International Odissi Conference
The UNC Charlotte Department of Dance will present a three-day symposium of dance performances, master classes and scholarly panels on Odissi, an Indian classical dance, Friday to Sunday, May 3-5.

Fifth Year Architecture Studio Designs Innovation Barn Brewhouse
Students have designed and created a neighborhood coffee stand at the Innovation Barn in Charlotte’s Belmont neighborhood.

Students help design Levine Museum exhibition
Students in the architectural history class “Museums: Southeast + Beyond” have worked this semester with the Levine Museum of the New South to design and install the exhibition, “The Legacy of Lynching.”
Coming to Charlotte from the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, the exhibition will open on Wednesday, April 24, and will be displayed through Monday, June 17.

First Bigleaf Magnolia Art and Garden Festival scheduled
UNC Charlotte’s Botanical Gardens is holding a new three-day festival that combines nature and fine arts.

Department of Theatre receives full NAST accreditation
The National Association of Schools of Theatre has granted full membership to UNC Charlotte’s Department of Theatre.

Portuguese guest conductor to lead Wind Ensemble
Simão Francisco from Portugal will be a guest conductor for “An Iberian Celebration,” an evening of Spanish and Portuguese music. This concert will be at 7:30 p.m., Monday, April 15, in the Anne R. Belk Theater of Robinson Hall. Tickets are $8.
