Voice students to compete in national competition

Two UNC Charlotte music students will compete in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) National Student Auditions on Tuesday, July 7.

The students, Hunter Aldridge and Tyrez Dabbs, are tenors who study with Brian Arreola, assistant professor of voice and director of the Department of Music opera workshop program.

Architecture alumnus, Cornelius mayor named AIA Fellow

School of Architecture alumnus Chuck Travis was inducted into the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Election to the College of Fellows is the highest honor bestowed by AIA upon an architect in the United States. Travis joins only three other members in the North Carolina AIA as well as 147 AIA members nationwide to be awarded this prestigious designation this year.

UNC Charlotte alumnus named Atlanta planning chief

Tim Keane, who earned a bachelor’s degree in geography and a master’s degree in architecture from UNC Charlotte, has been named commissioner of planning and community development for the city of Atlanta.

Keane had served as director of planning, preservation and sustainability for the city of Charleston since 2009 and previously served as director of planning for the town of Davidson.

Architecture professor receives Graham Foundation grant

Charles Davis II, assistant professor of architectural history, was awarded a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts for his project “Building Character: The Racial Politics of Modern Architectural Style, 1860-1945.” 

Established in 1956, the Graham Foundation awards project-based grants to individuals and organizations to create public programs to foster the development of diverse and challenging ideas about architecture and the role it plays in arts, culture and society.

Marching band director to guest on ‘The Live Wire’

Jeffrey Miller, associate director of bands/director of athletic bands, will be the guest on the June 4 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. The Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band will take the field this September for its inaugural season. Miller will  give an insider’s view of the band’s preparations and what home football game attendees can expect to see on the field.

Music alum wins gold medal in international competition

Saxophonist and UNC Charlotte alumnus Benjamin Still has won a gold medal in the 2015 Fischoff Competition as a member of the Mirasol Quartet.

Founded in 1973, the Fischoff Competition is the largest chamber music competition in the world. Each year, an average of 125 ensembles, representing 22 nationalities, enter the competition in either the wind or string categories of three to six performers. Fischoff is the only national chamber music competition with both senior divisions (ages 18-35) and a junior division (age 18 and younger).

‘A Continent on Display’ opens in Rowe Galleries

The Department of Art and Art History and Rowe Galleries are hosting “A Continent on Display: Selections from the Collection of Michael Gallis,” an exhibit that features 10 masks representing nine cultural groups from various regions in Africa.

Gallis provided UNC Charlotte art history major Susan Fredson-Cole access to his private collection. The exhibition will run through Thursday, May 7.

Jazz Ensemble to host saxophonist Dave Finucane in concert

The UNC Charlotte Jazz Ensemble will host special guest artist Dave Finucane, tenor saxophone, in concert on Tuesday, April 28, in the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts, Belk Theater.

MAX to debut on campus with free performances

The College of Arts + Architecture’s new Mobile Arts & Community Experience (MAX) will make its first appearance on campus the week of April 20-24, with live performances in the quad between the colleges of Education and Health and Human Services.

Theatre professor Carlos Cruz to guest on April 16 ‘Live Wire’

Carlos Cruz, assistant professor of theatre, will be the guest on the April 16 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. He will discuss the Mobile Arts & Community Experience (MAX) and its upcoming appearance and performances on campus April 21-24.
