Computer science professor Liz Johnson recently returned from a summer vacation in Nepal, where she worked on women’s empowerment projects with the Volunteer Initiative of Nepal to help prevent sex trafficking.She also worked in rural Kavresthali, assisting women to build micro-credit businesses and set up social media accounts to more effectively market their products. Johnson was invited to return in July 2020 to speak on the complexity of approaches to policy research as part of an international conference.

Helping students complete their undergraduate degrees in a timely manner is important to UNC Charlotte and the entire UNC System. The University recently received a financial award to implement “Funds to Finish?” as part of the inaugural Student Success Innovation Lab (SSIL) grant competition.

Treven Stoddard, a senior computer science major, recently received the Blue Diamond Student Innovator Award for developing an application to assist algebra and calculus students.

College of Computing and Informatics Dean Fatma Mili was in North Africa recently, where she served as co-chair of Noor 2019, a conference focused on higher education during a time of dramatic transition in her home country, Tunisia.

The U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 list of Best Graduate Schools rankings are out, and once again, UNC Charlotte recorded a number of superlatives.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation and Tata Consultancy Services, in partnership with the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance, North Carolina Technology Association and the Research and Economic Development Office at UNC Charlotte, will hold the second Digital Empowers regional forum on Wednesday, March 13.

A student team from the College of Computing and Informatics recently defended an oil pipeline’s control system from a devastating cyberattack. This simulation was part of the Department of Defense Cyberforce Competition, in which teams from 62 colleges and universities vied nationwide.

In partnership with the Levine Museum of the New South, Assistant Professor of Urban Design Ming-Chun Lee and UNC Charlotte students will help Charlotte residents discover the stories behind the rise and fall of Eastland Mall and its surrounding neighborhood at an event on Saturday, Dec. 8.

The event, “Being a Historian for a Day,” will take place at Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Hickory Grove Branch, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
