CCI team creates cryptocurrency platform to win hackathon
A team of students from the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) took the top prize – $10,000 cash and a $500 credit from Amazon Web Services – at the 2018 University Fintech Hackathon.
The CCI squad developed WADS, a multi-dimensional platform that allows cryptocurrency users to pay for goods and services without lengthy wait times and high exchange fees.
CCI professor receives NIH award for metabolomics study
Xiuxia Du, an associate professor of bioinformatics in the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI), was awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Cooperative Agreement Award as the principal investigator on a project to develop metabolomics data analysis and interpretation tools.
CCI students create ‘Best Social Good’ hack
A team of ethical hackers from UNC Charlotte’s College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) was recognized for devising the “Best Social Good Hack” at HackNC, an event held in collaboration with competitions at eight locations around the globe and featuring as many as 10,000 student hackers.

CCI receives national award for retention of underrepresented students
The College of Computing and Informatics (CCI) was awarded the second annual CMD-IT University Award for Retention of Minorities and Students with Disabilities in Computer Science by the Center for Minorities and People with Disabilities in IT (CMID-IT). This honor highlights organizations that have exhibited commitment and success in accommodating students from underrepresented groups in undergraduate Computer Science programs.
Alumna leading CCI NorthState mentoring program
Der Vang ’11 recently was named director of mentoring in the College of Computing and Informatics. In this role, she will oversee the NorthState CCI Mentorship Program, which was created by a gift from the communications/information technology company to EXPONENTIAL: The Campaign for UNC Charlotte. The program will benefit CCI students by providing guidance on personal, social and academic matters.
Lecture series to explore upcoming presidential election in Bosnia and Herzegovina
A series of five events this fall will focus on the campaign for and election of the tripartite presidency in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Mirsad Hadžikadić, a well-known UNC Charlotte professor, is one of the candidates.

Bioinformatics professor receives NSF funding to research reprogramming cells to cure genetic disorders
College of Computing and Informatics Assistant Professor of Bioinformatics Way Sung was awarded a $670,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the project, “The Evolution and Reprogramming of DNA Replication Fidelity.”
“Mutations are generally bad to the health of an organism and can lead to cancer and other genetic diseases,” said Sung. “The goal of this work is to reprogram cells to enhance their ability to repair and resist DNA mutations. The ultimate goal of our work is to extend cellular longevity, increase cellular health and reduce cancer formation.”
