Graduate Social Work program continues climb in national rankings
The UNC Charlotte School of Social Work graduate program has climbed into the top 25 percent nationally in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The Master of Social Work degree program moved up 12 spots on this year’s list, from 68 to 56; 234 schools offer graduate degrees in social work nationwide.
“Our jump in the rankings reflects social work faculty members’ reputations for high quality, nationally relevant scholarship and teaching,” said MSW program director Bob Herman-Smith.
Wood inducted into state’s athletic trainers Hall of Fame
UNC Charlotte athletic training clinical coordinator Bret Wood is a 2016 inductee into the North Carolina Athletic Trainers Association (NCATA) Hall of Fame.
The award honors an NCATA athletic trainer with at least 20 years of experience; nominations are by peers and evaluated by the association’s board of directors.
“There is a long list of nationally and internationally recognized athletic trainers in the N.C. Hall of Fame,” Wood said. “It was quite an honor to be considered a part of that group. It was certainly a welcome surprise.”
Social work task force would serve Charlotte Latinos
A pair of UNC Charlotte social work master’s students recently unveiled a plan to help provide mental health services to Charlotte’s underserved Latino population.
Graduate students Laura Pierce and Cameron Rifkin presented the plan at the UNC Social Entrepreneurship Conference after being selected as UNC Charlotte’s participants.
Hatcher named inaugural director for School of Social Work
Schnavia Hatcher is the inaugural director of the School of Social Work in the College of Health and Human Services.
Hatcher will begin her position with the University in early August. She will join UNC Charlotte from the University of Texas at Arlington, where she serves as a tenured professor in the School of Social Work and director of the Center for African American Studies.

“Military Culture: Have You Ever Served?” is free and open to the public and will be held Tuesday, March 1, at the UNC Charlotte Student Union.
National and state experts, students, faculty, service providers and members of the general public will join in a dialogue on military culture and the need to join forces to support veterans.
Online nursing program jumps in national rankings
The UNC Charlotte School of Nursing’s national profile received a significant boost this month with the online graduate program’s 33-spot ascendance in the 2016 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
The program jumped to 54 in the national rankings, up from 87 last year. Department Chair Dee Baldwin attributed the improvement to multiple factors, including:
Public Health program reaccredited
The UNC Charlotte Public Health program has received full seven-year reaccreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH), a national accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
The program consists of the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree options in the Department of Public Health Sciences.
‘Spectacular’ Belk Gym lauded at re-opening celebration
