Student selected from 1,500 entries for U.N. essay contest
English major Lauren Klein has been chosen from among 1,500 students from 128 countries as an honoree in the United Nations “Many Languages One World” contest.
Klein, who is in her fourth semester of Russian classes, was selected in the category “Russian Language.” She is one of 60 finalists who will represent each of the six official languages of the United Nations – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.
University enters partnership to report on homelessness
In a joint press conference, the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and UNC Charlotte announced a partnership for an annual reporting on homelessness issues spearheaded by the University’s Urban Institute.
Communication studies students taking SNAP Challenge
For a week, 39 students in a health communication topics course will attempt to live on $29 – the average food stamp benefit for a person in North Carolina.
The assignment, under the direction of Jillian Tullis, assistant professor of communication studies, is one aspect of the course “Health Communication Film and Technology.” Students were introduced to the topic through the documentary “Food Inc.,” a film that examines corporate farming in the United States.
First dance marathon benefits Levine Children’s Hospital
UNC Charlotte students started dancing at 7 p.m. Nov. 15 and stayed on their feet for 12 hours to celebrate raising $35,066.25 for the Levine Childen’s Hospital.
The 49er Dance Mine, held this past weekend in the Student Union, was the first of its kind at UNC Charlotte; it was part of a national movement in which colleges and universities across the country generate financial support for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital in their communities.
University celebrates Giving Green Campaign success
UNC Charlotte faculty, staff and administrators gathered in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons Nov. 14 to celebrate the successful culmination of the 2013 Giving Green Campaign.
Co-chairs Joël Gallegos and Misty Hathcock made the “big reveal” as Chancellor Philip Dubois announced the campaign total of $154,609. This figure, which combines gifts to the ASC, SECC and the UNC Foundation, topped last year’s effort.

CCI student receives national Presidential Service Award
Scott Heggen, a Ph.D. student in the College of Computing and Informatics, received a national Presidential Service Award presented by Citizen Schools.
Volunteers needed to complete Habitat build
The UNC Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Campus Chapter needs volunteers to finalize “The House the 49ers Built.”
During Homecoming, the chapter conducted the on-campus portion of the build, after a successful fundraising campaign. The house is now at its permanent location, 1312 Onyx Road, Charlotte, 28216.
Final construction will start Friday, Nov. 1, and during the upcoming weeks, students, alumni, faculty and staff teams will have a chance to be part of this historic community project.
One-day conference to focus on needs of student veterans
The College of Health and Human Services Department of Social Work is co-sponsoring the one-day conference “Boots to Books: Understanding Military Culture and Supporting a Successful Transition” on Monday, Nov. 18, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall.
UNC Charlotte Center City to host ‘Solving It Together’
Mayoral candidates Patrick Cannon and Edwin Peacock along with three area journalists will participate in the free, community “Solving It Together” event scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 23, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
WCNC anchor Dave Wagner will moderate the discussion; the event will be streamed live on WCNC.com and CharlotteObserver.com.
