Update on VCBA

As a result of unforeseen personal circumstances, Brian Trent will not assume his duties as the new vice chancellor for business affairs (VCBA) at UNC Charlotte effective Aug. 30. He informed Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber of his decision this week. “I want Niner Nation to know how much I appreciate everyone who made me feel at home during my visits to campus and who had already reached out to welcome me to my new role, ” said Trent. “This was my dream job, but right now, the needs of my family must come first.”  

Steele named interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management

Richard Steele, associate vice chancellor for business services, was appointed interim associate vice chancellor for facilities management effective Thursday, Aug. 12. This will be a long-term assignment to ensure stability during leadership transitions. At this time, the University will not actively recruit for the associate vice chancellor for facilities management position. 

Accreditation commission to assess PPS Communications Center

As part of its initial accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), the UNC Charlotte Department of Police and Public Safety (PPS) Communications Center must undergo an assessment. This is the Communications Center’s first review cycle; an assessment will follow every four years.As part of this process, interested parties can provide feedback to the accreditors. A call-in session with CALEA representatives is scheduled for 9 to 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 9. Call 704-687-8300 to be connected with an assessor.

Clemendore needs shared leave

Desiree Clemendore from the Student Activity Center and Venue Management Office, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Aug. 10.To contribute leave, faculty and staff should refer to the requirements and participant forms in Personnel Information Memorandum (PIM) 29 or in the literature racks outside of the Benefits Office, King Building, Room 207. UNC Charlotte re-signs carbon commitment

Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber reaffirmed the University’s commitment to climate action by re-signing the Carbon Commitment, one of the Presidents’ Climate Leadership Commitments maintained by Second Nature. The Carbon Commitment was first signed in 2009 by Chancellor Emeritus Philip L. Dubois.

HRL’s Margaret Kanda has died

Margaret Kanda, a building and environmental technician with the Office of Housing and Residence Life since 2016, died June 3 while traveling out-of-state. Her obituary was published online, and funeral services were held in late June. Messages of condolences can be offered through the Wilson Funeral & Cremation Service website.

Professor Emeritus David Hartgen left legacy in transportation studies

David Hartgen died May 22, 2021. From 1989 to 2006, Hartgen was professor of transportation in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at UNC Charlotte.During his UNC Charlotte tenure, he established the University’s interdisciplinary transportation studies center, studying transportation systems throughout the nation. He conducted extensive assessments of congestion, road condition, growth and transit service in North Carolina, with particular focus on Charlotte. He was author of more than 300 studies.

Virtual On-Campus Job Fair registration is Live

UNC Charlotte’s Virtual On-Campus Job Fair will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The provides departments with an excellent opportunity to recruit students for on-campus positions, and partake in a virtual fair to interview interested candidates before they return to campus. Departments can recruit for FWS, STW, UPIP and Graduate Assistant positions.

New Niner Research IRB module to launch

Research and Economic Development will launch the IRB Human Subjects Niner Research module on July 1. This module will replace the current IRB protocol submission and management system, IRBIS.  Additional information about the IRB module and retirement of the current system, IRBIS, is on the Research and Economic Development website.
