Faculty/staff workshops address student mental health and racism

While the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at UNC Charlotte provides ongoing critical care to support student mental health on campus, it also focuses on training other campus administrators outside CAPS to identify students in need. This month, CAPS will offer two virtual workshops for faculty and staff dedicated to “Supporting Student Mental Health Amidst Multiple Pandemics.” In particular, the workshops address the coronavirus pandemic and the impact of racism, inside and outside the classroom.

Third ‘Supporting Students’ workshop offered

The Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at UNC Charlotte will hold a third installment of its virtual workshop, “Supporting Student Mental Health Amidst Multiple Pandemics” at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 11.

Book club to discuss ‘Me and White Supremacy’

“Me and White Supremacy: Combat Racism, Change the World and Become a Good Ancestor” by Layla Saad is the latest selection for the Atkins Library Book Club; the library will hold a virtual discussion of the work from 2 to 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26 via Google Meets.

CLAS remembers professor emeritus Edward Perzel

Edward Perzel, 81, professor emeritus in the Department of History in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences (CLAS), passed away on June 16, 2020, in Bristol, Tennessee. Perzel served as chair of the Department of History, president of the faculty and associate dean of what was then called the College of Arts and Sciences.

Confucius Institute programs to transition as part of strategic planning effort

As an integral component of efforts to advance students’ knowledge and ability to thrive in a diverse, global society, UNC Charlotte will transition the Chinese language and culture programs of its Confucius Institute to the Department of Languages and Culture Studies in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences on Dec. 31, 2020.

CHHS announces leadership transitions

With the approaching retirement of Jane Neese, senior associate dean of academic affairs, Dean Catrine Tudor-Locke has announced a series of transitions in leadership at the UNC Charlotte College of Health and Human Services.Neese has provided Tudor-Locke with formal notice of her intent to retire Sept. 1, 2021.

New mentor program to focus on Increasing undeclared student persistence and progression

UNC Charlotte’s Office of Undergraduate Education, this fall, will implement a new program aimed to increase student retention and sense of belonging. Undeclared undergraduate students at UNC Charlotte will be invited to be matched with an upper-division student through UNC Charlotte’s Niners Mentor Collective, a mentorship program that supports new students’ persistence and social adjustment.

UNC BOG to hold emergency meeting

The UNC Board of Governors will meet at 9:30 a.m., Friday, June 19, to elect a president. UNC BOG members will participate via videoconference in conjunction with those participating from the Center for School Leadership Development in Chapel Hill. This meeting will be streamed live online.Some agenda items will be considered in closed session under the provisions of the Open Meetings Law.
