Computer science major wins Blue Diamond Student Innovator Award

Treven Stoddard, a senior computer science major, recently received the Blue Diamond Student Innovator Award for developing an application to assist algebra and calculus students.

Harris Teeter gift supports food pantry

Harris Teeter recently made a donation to the Jamil Niner Student Pantry. A gift of $10,000 in Harris Teeter gift cards and industrial shelving to update the pantry’s storage needs will assist the organization’s efforts to combat student food insecurity on UNC Charlotte’s campus.

Ph.D. student awarded international scholarship

Lydia Roos, a doctoral student in health psychology, recently received the P.E.O. International Scholarship, a competitive merit-based $15,000 award.

Given by the P.E.O. Sisterhood, an organization focused on helping women around the world participate in graduate study in the United States and Canada, the international scholarship is intended to recognize and encourage academic excellence and achievement by women in doctoral-level programs.

Sigma Tau Delta’s crowdfunding effort to support convention trip

Several members of UNC Charlotte’s Sigma Tau Delta, the English honor society, will present creative pieces and participate in a special discussion during the 2019 Sigma Tau Delta International Convention, scheduled for March 27-30 in St. Louis, Missouri.

The University chapter is crowdfunding to raise $3,000 to pay for the registration, travel and accommodations for eight members to attend the convention. This year’s theme is “Work In Progress.”

Lee College of Engineering recognizes teaching excellence

Courtney Green and Andrew Wills are the 2018 recipients of the Lee College of Engineering Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Awards of Excellence, respectively.

Green, a lecturer and advisor in the Engineering Technology and Construction Management Department (ETCM), joined the University in January 2015. Since then, she has taught nine different undergraduate courses to students from all five academic programs within ETCM, ranging from the freshman to the junior level.

Her teaching philosophy continues to evolve with practice and with experience.

Lewis to research black girlhood during National Humanities Center residency

Associate Professor of English Janaka Bowman Lewis will spend four weeks this summer in residency at the National Humanities Center in the Research Triangle Park, working on the project, “Black Girlhood and the Power of Belonging.” Lewis will join a select group of about 40 scholars from across the nation who were chosen to conduct research in residency at the center.

After Senior Bowl, NFL Combine next up for Nate Davis

Charlotte 49ers four-year starting offensive lineman Nate Davis will be headed to the NFL Combine, Feb. 26 to March 4. Davis, who earned all-Conference USA recognition for each of the last three years, participated in the Reese’s Senior Bowl in January and has been earning strong reviews from NFL teams.

“Going to the Senior Bowl was definitely a blessing,” Davis said. “To go against great competition and learn some tools. It wasn’t just drills and practice but also interviews and meetings. That should help me at the Combine to be ready for the rigors.”
