Student Union Art Gallery displaying works by local printmaker

“Passages,” an exhibit featuring work from local printmaker Adrian Rhodes, will be displayed through Tuesday, Oct. 21, in the Student Union Art Gallery. A free reception with the artist will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25.
Artwork in the exhibit explores internal conflict as reflected in the tension between rigid structural forms and organic, intuitive mark making.

University to celebrate LGBTQ History Month

The University’s Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) will host several discussions and activities in October in recognition of LGBTQ History Month and other topics of diversity.
MRC programs scheduled for this observance include:
Safe Zone 2.0 Training, 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, Student Union, Room 261

University to host Carolina Conference on Queer Youth

The 2014 Carolina Conference on Queer Youth “Building Support and Envisioning Justice for LGBTQ Youth in their Schools and Communities” will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 17, in the Student Union.
The conference is free for those who sign up online and the entire community is invited to attend.

Bell ringers, speakers sought for December commencement

The Dean of Students Office is seeking two commencement speakers and two bell ringers for UNC Charlotte’s winter commencement, which is Saturday, Dec. 13, in Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these prestigious honors.

Hypnotist Chris Jones to perform

Hypnotist Chris Jones will perform at 7 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, in the Student Union, Room 340. This free, public event is being sponsored by the Campus Activities Board.
Originally from Chicago, Jones took a roundabout way to becoming one of today’s most entertaining performers on the college market. In college, he studied sociology and psychology, using magic to connect with other students. After years of performing magic and stand-up comedy at weddings, bars and smoky nightclubs, Jones picked up hypnosis and added it to his routine.

Participate in Homecoming festivities, parade

The UNC Charlotte Homecoming Committee is extending a special invitation to faculty and staff to participate in its second football Homecoming Parade and Pep Rally to be held on Friday, Oct. 24.  Any campus department or group  that would like to walk, drive or float in the parade should register online at the Homecoming website by Friday, Sept. 26.

Student-driven community garden to take root

A student organization established earlier this year is preparing to break ground on a community garden to be located near the Storrs Building and the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.
Formation of the UNC Charlotte Community Garden resulted from efforts by seniors Jake Emerson, a mathematics major from Gastonia; Kevin Rodengen, an earth sciences major from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Chloe Rodengen, a nursing major who also is from Fort Lauderdale. They worked with other student leaders and faculty and staff members in departments and disciplines across campus.

Registration open for annual Multicultural Leadership Conference

The University will host the 13th annual Multicultural Leadership Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Student Union. Equality and diversity activist and actor R.J. Mitte will be the conference’s keynote speaker.

Figurative painting exhibit features artwork by UNC Charlotte students

“Figures in Painting,” an exhibit that showcases artwork from students in the Department of Art & Art History, is on display through Wednesday, Sept. 17, in the Student Union Art Gallery.
The studio course “Figure in Painting” is an intermediate painting class that explores the human form as a vehicle for artistic expression. Students use acrylic paints mixed with a variety of other compatible media to observe and experiment with anatomical structure.

New office to oversee University’s Title IX coordination

Colleges and universities that receive federal funding must comply with regulations outlined in Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments of 1972, which have been revised a number of times since their passage.
