Campus community says ‘Bon Voyage’ to Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band
On May 31, 137 members of the Pride of Niner Nation Marching Band departed from campus to begin a journey to Normandy, France, where they will be the first university band from North Carolina to represent the United States at an annual commemoration of the D-Day invasion.
Engineering team places third at NASA Robotic Mining Competition
The UNC Charlotte Astrobotics Robotic Team, the 49er Miners, recently finished third in the Caterpillar Autonomy Award at the 2018 NASA Robotic Mining Competition at Kennedy Space Center. The team joined an elite group of few schools in the history of the competition to accomplish a fully autonomous mining run (approximately 50 colleges and universities have competed each year for the past nine years).

The Lee College of Engineering’s 49er Rocketry Team recently placed second in the nation in the 2018 NASA Student Launch competition, the highest finish in the team’s history.
Student-athletes exhibited hearts of gold in record service to community
Charlotte 49ers student-athletes donated a record 5,000-plus hours of community service to the Charlotte area and surrounding communities during the 2017-18 academic year.
In large part, the donated hours benefitted local charitable organizations. Many activities, like visits to the Levine Children’s Hospital and area elementary schools or clinics/presentations at Education Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day directly affected children.
Retirement reception for Jim Hoppa scheduled
James (Jim) M. Hoppa, senior associate vice chancellor for student union, activities and recreation (SUAR) in the Division of Student Affairs, will retire Friday, June 1, after 36 years of distinguished service, leadership and dedication to student life at UNC Charlotte.
A retirement reception in Hoppa’s honor is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 29, in the Popp Martin Student Union, Room 340GHI.
Biology, engineering graduate students receive prestigious NSF awards
National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships support outstanding graduate students. Devin Clegg and Corbin Grohol are two such students, and they are the latest UNC Charlotte recipients of this prestigious award.
