The UNC Charlotte Police and Public Safety Department, along with representatives from Mecklenburg Safe Communities, recently held an event to raise awareness around the dangers of drunk driving.

Mark West, chair of the English Department, is co-editor and a contributor to the recently released “Walt Disney, from Reader to Storyteller: Essays on the Literary Inspirations.”

David Goldfield, the Robert Lee Bailey Professor of History, recently spent 10 days in Germany conducting seminars on American environmental policy as part of the U.S. Embassy’s support of the “Going Green” program, a German-American learning project.

As part of the visit, Goldfield spoke to students at the Bavarian Academy of Public Policy and the North Rhineland-Westphalia Ministry of Education. He also participated in reviewing the top Going Green projects by German high school students, along with U.S. Ambassador to Germany John Emerson.

Three projects by students from the Lee College of Engineering were judged to be the best at the recent Industrial Senior Design Expo. During the event, project teams presented their completed projects and mid-project design posters.

South Village Crossing, the new 56,146-square-foot dining and gathering facility nestled between Moore and Scott residence halls, is scheduled to serve its first meals Tuesday, Jan. 6.

“Our students, faculty, staff and guests will be impressed with the tasteful design, culinary innovation and warm, welcoming atmosphere,” said Ana Alvarez, director of auxiliary services. “We expect this building to solidify the sense of community at South Village and attract and delight students and staff from all over campus.”  

This fall, UNC Charlotte students took part in several efforts to benefit Habitat for Humanity, including the second on-campus homecoming build by the UNC Charlotte Chapter of Habitat for Humanity.

Shortly after the Homecoming football game, the chapter house was moved to its permanent location in Arvin Meadows, a neighborhood off Statesville Road.

According to an article in the Charlotte Observer, the homeowner is Peggy McMullen, 55.

Nearly 70 nontraditional students were recognized for their academic achievements during the annual scholarship luncheon held by the Office of Adult Students and Evening Services (OASES).

Twenty-seven of the honorees were awarded Osher Reentry Scholarships established through an endowment by the Bernard Osher Foundation, and 11 students were recognized with the Carol Ann Douglas Reentry Scholarship. Also, for the first time, the Foundation for the Carolinas provided support for the ANSWER and Gratitude Endowment scholarships.

The NinerTech store, located in the Student Union, will hold a “Pre-Black Friday” sale with educational discounts and store gift card incentives during the week of Nov. 17-21.

Operating as a nonprofit service of the University, NinerTech offers students, faculty and staff a combination of Apple, HP and Dell computers, as well as peripheral products. University members can shop for a wide array of accessories from items to protect their devices to earphones for walks on campus to accessories to keep their fitness on track.

As part of the on going series “Forty IX’ers: Know Your Title IX,”  the University will host a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 17, in the Student Union, Room 340 CF.

The “Forty IX’ers: Know Your Title IX” series is sponsored by the UNC Charlotte Title IX Office, Center for Wellness Promotion and the Dean of Students Office, in conjunction with the Feminist Union. Its purpose is to address issues of sexual assault, stalking, and relationship violence.

College of Arts + Architecture students Rob Bates, Kellie Funderburk, Kaitlin McCluskey and Jemima Omalay are semifinalists for the official poster competition to promote the 2015 U.S. Figure Skating Championship being held in Greensboro. This national contest is being coordinated by Greensboro arts organization Greenhill.
