University Convocation, which traditionally marks the start of the academic year, will begin at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, in Cone University Center, McKnight Hall. This annual event is an opportunity for the campus community to learn more about the University’s short- and long-term goals and plans.
Chancellor Philip L. Dubois and Provost Joan Lorden will address faculty, staff and students.
In addition, Jim Kay, chair of the Staff Council, will give remarks; Greg Starrett from the Department of Anthropology will present the faculty agenda for the 2014-15 academic year.

UNC Charlotte freshman Jack Bretz Jr. was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia this past August. At the time, the 20-year-old was weeks from attempting to obtain a black belt in the martial art form Tang Soo Do.
After months of treatment, staff members at Novant Health Blume Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, inspired by Bretz’s “courage, resolve, determination and discipline,” contacted the Dream On 3 organization to help Bretz realize his sports dream to meet Chuck Norris.

Works by local artist Paul Keysar will be displayed Monday, July 7, through Thursday, July 24, in the Student Union Gallery.
“While the City Sleeps: Night Paintings” features a group of landscape paintings of Concord, Charlotte and other local towns at night.
“As an artist, I am continually observing life around me,” Keysar explained. “I am fascinated by the effects of light, atmosphere, and weather. My goal is to show the beauty of the land and man’s dependence on it.”

Whether looking for a walk in the woods or some fun on a lake, UNC Charlotte’s Venture outdoor education program has the right summer trip. Led by experienced outdoor facilitators, Venture trips are open to UNC Charlotte students, faculty, staff and the general public.
All trips require a mandatory pre-trip meeting to review the itinerary, safety precautions and for participants to meet their companions.  Typically, all equipment and transportation are provided by Venture.
SUMMER 2014 TRIPS

UNC Charlotte students demonstrated their skills at the annual Association of College Unions International billiard and table tennis tournaments.
“Our students represented UNC Charlotte with excellence in competition and sportsmanship,” said James Contratto, assistant director of student activities for weekend programs.
In the men’s 9-ball billiards competition, UNC Charlotte’s David Anderson took second place among a field of 50 players.

“Let Your Lines Lead You” is a display featuring work by UNC Charlotte alumna Suzy Hannon. It explores the movement of lines in emotions, and it will be displayed Tuesday, June 10, through Tuesday, July 1, in the Student Union Art Gallery.
A public reception for the exhibit will be at 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, in the gallery.
The display features a group of large-scale figures hung to form a labyrinth to convey the universal human emotions of joy, apathy, grief and confidence.

The UNC Charlotte student chapter of an international city/county management will gather with government officials at a kick-off party 100 days before the association’s 100th annual conference in Charlotte.
“The kickoff party will give students an early opportunity to network and jump-start their careers in local government,” said Paarth Mehta, president of the student chapter of the International City/County Management Association. The chapter is affiliated with UNC Charlotte’s Gerald Fox Master of Public Administration program in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences.

Public Policy doctoral student Ada Uche recently received a 2014-15 American Educational Research Association (AREA) Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Educational Research. As part of the writing process, Uche utilized resources provided by UNC Charlotte’s Center for Graduate Life (CGL).

The Lee College of Engineering’s Materials Characterization Lab is now in the Cameron Applied Research Center. The facility provides faculty and student researchers with analysis of advanced materials, as well as sampling services, training, shared instrument usage and expertise at an affordable cost.

UNC Charlotte’s Iranian Student Organization will hold its annual Nowruz celebration at 8 p.m., Friday, March 21, in the Student Union, Room 340.
A celebration of the first day of spring, the Nowruz observance will feature music and dance, standup comedy performances and demonstration of beautiful Persian dances by the Kereshmeh group. Light refreshments will be served prior to the second half of the program.
