Risk Management, Safety and Security changes name
The department formerly known as Risk Management, Safety and Security is now Safety and Security.
The name change, which was effective July 1, 2017, was made to more accurately reflect the department’s areas of responsibility in the Division of Business Affairs, as well as to help clarify the addition of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) to the newly created Division of Institutional Integrity.
Counseling Center now in new location
The Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (formerly the Counseling Center) has moved its operations to a new building adjacent to the Student Health Center.
Charlotte Wheels bike program available
Charlotte Wheels is a new campus bike-share program using Gotcha Bikes. Ten rack corrals have been installed, and 50 Gotcha Bikes are available for rent.
The bikes are belt-driven and have Shirmano three-speed internal gears; they also have baskets with bungee cords to secure books and packages. Safety lights illuminate the front and rear.
Repaving to close road, parking lot temporarily
On Thursday, Aug. 3, the drive at Wallis Hall will be closed between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. to pave over the gravel area.
Also, Parking Lot 15 at the Burson Building will be closed for repaving on Friday, Aug. 4.
Remember to exercise caution when approaching construction zones, and watch for signage and construction vehicles and personnel.
Candy Shoppe to close
July 31 marks the final day of operation for the Candy Shoppe, located in the Cone University Center.
Take advantage of special pricing on all remaining candies, drinks and popcorn with items on sale like it’s 1985, said Donna Merck, associate director of the Cone Center.
‘Light Rail Connects Us’ – train tests scheduled to start this week
Later this week, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will begin testing trains along the route to the UNC Charlotte Main Station. There will be trains traveling at very slow speeds on the tracks and possibly stopping at the station on campus. This will occur primarily in evening hours.
Cone Visitor Deck to close temporarily
Cone Visitor Deck will be closed from Monday, May 8, through Friday, June 2, to upgrade parking equipment.
Cone Deck 1 entrance (on the Lot 7/Belk Gym side) will be open for visitors to use; signage will provide directions.
Visitors will use ParkMobile to pay for parking (instructions will be in the deck). Visitors who have validated tickets should place the voucher on the car dash.
Lot 30 (between Reese Building and Cone University Center) will have temporary visitor disability spaces.
Safety tips during ongoing light rail construction
UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) continue to prepare the campus for light rail’s arrival. This summer will bring an increase in construction traffic, periodic traffic disruption and several active construction sites.

University earns third Tree Campus USA designation
UNC Charlotte was honored with 2016 Tree Campus USA recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to effective urban forest management.
Tree Campus USA is a national program created in 2008 by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. There are 296 campuses across the United States with this recognition.
