UNC Charlotte’s Camps on Campus cultivates young minds through summer enrichment
As a child, Renee Welsh-Noel ’16 was interested in dance. So one of the camps she enrolled in through UNC Charlotte’s Camps on Campus summer program was “Global Beat.”Welsh-Noel learned styles from around the world: an Irish dance, salsa and a traditional Japanese folk dance. “I remember we learned a hula dance one year, and I still remember it to this day,” said Welsh-Noel, who earned a degree in dance performance.
Alumna’s love of language taking her to Spain
Misty Morin ’18 eventually plans to earn a doctorate, but first, the next destination in her journey is Spain, where she will share her love of language through a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
Fulbright to give alumnus opportunity to grow community
Harry Gilliard ’11 accompanied American University students to Havana, Cuba, in March, to study the intersections of culture, religion, history and economics. In 2020, he is heading to Brazil through a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship.
Dance alumna receives research fellowship
Dance alumna Lillian Willis ’17 was awarded a Short-Term Research Fellowship from the New York Public Library for the project, “Seeking Accessibility: American Dance Practices for the Blind and Visually Impaired.”
Faces – Darin Spease
It seems Darin Spease ’89, deputy athletics director for the Charlotte 49ers, was destined for a sports-focused life and career. Growing up, he played many different sports and knew he wanted to continue to be a player, in college and beyond, even if he wasn’t physically in the game. Now with 25-plus years in the field, no pun intended, he has made a career out of a passion.
Spease, who grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, became a 49er to pursue an undergraduate education through the Belk College of Business.
49ers football trio earns preseason honors
A school record three Charlotte 49ers were named preseason all-Conference USA by the league’s 14 head coaches. Sophomore kicker Jonathan Cruz was voted the league’s preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, and he, redshirt senior defensive end Alex Highsmith and senior running back Benny LeMay were named to the preseason all-Conference team.
Music Department to hold annual piano sale
During the past academic year, the University’s Department of Music has had access to first-class standard and digital pianos through an association with the Rockley Family Foundation.
To perpetuate this program, these instruments, along with those provided other institutions, will be sold at the Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts.
Individuals can make an appointment to attend a “pre-sale” Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 1-3, by calling 704-661-2792.
The final sale will be 2 to 5 p.m., Aug. 3, and no appointment is required to attend.
