Annual Great Gold Rush Auction scheduled

The Charlotte 49ers Athletic Foundation will host the 36th annual Great Gold Rush Auction, Saturday, June 1, in Halton Arena, located in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center.

University met RecycleMania goals, Earth Month events a success

Earlier this year, UNC Charlotte competed in the national RecycleMania competition, involving 300 colleges in 43 states. The RecycleMania competition results were released recently. This year, UNC Charlotte composted or recycled 69.5 million pounds of waste, and 300 million single-use plastic bottles were collected during the competition.

Groundbreaking for Veterans Park scheduled

The UNC Charlotte Veteran Services Office will host a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Veterans Park at 9:30 a.m., Monday, May 27.

Christopher Orr ’18 conceived Veterans Park to recognize UNC Charlotte’s historical connections to veteran students and to honor all past, present and future veterans who would attend or work at the University. UNC Charlotte was founded in 1946 as the Charlotte Center in part to provide educational opportunities to veterans who returned from World War II.

49er Rocketry Team scores second in NASA contest

The results are in, and UNC Charlotte’s 49er Rocketry Team achieved major success at this year’s NASA Student Launch Competition.

10th class of Levine Scholars to join UNC Charlotte

UNC Charlotte’s Levine Scholars Program has selected the 20 young leaders from across the United States who will be the members of the 10th class of this prestigious, academically competitive scholarship program. The scholars will join the University beginning with the fall 2019 semester.

PPS honors heroism of April 30 during annual awards ceremony

UNC Charlotte’s Police and Public Safety’s annual awards ceremony, held on May 17 in conjunction with National Police Week, had new meaning this year after the events of April 30.

Alum’s quartet wins national competition

The Aruna Quartet, a saxophone group that includes UNC Charlotte alumnus Andrew Schoen, won the Grand Prize in the 46th annual Fischoff Competition. Hosted by the Fischoff National Chamber Music Association, the competition is the largest chamber music competition in the United States. The Grand Prize-winning ensemble receives $13,500, a winner’s tour of the Midwestern United States and select appearances at the Emilia Romagna Festival in Italy this summer.

View ‘A Glass Rhinoceros’

The spring 2019 Mixed-Media/Print Media 3 studio art class recently completed a site-specific installation in the front window case at UNC Charlotte Center City. The colorful mixed-media work, “A Glass Rhinoceros,” explores concepts of movement, transformation and perception and was inspired by two works of literature: Eugène Ionesco’s play, “Rhinoceros,” and Paul Auster’s novella, “City of Glass.” 

CMPD awards Civilian Medal of Valor to Howell family

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) bestowed its first-ever Civilian Medal of Valor posthumously to Riley Howell, who lost his life in the campus shooting. Members of his family attended the annual CMPD Awards Ceremony, Wednesday, May 15, to accept the honor.

Howell, who died during the April 30 campus attack, displayed “courage, sacrifice and honor” in his actions to charge the gunman, said CMPD Lt. Brad Koch.

Men and Women Track and Field crowned conference champions

The Charlotte men’s and women’s programs both won gold, being crowned the 2019 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Track and Field Champions at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center on Sunday, May 12. This is the first time since joining C-USA that both the men’s and women’s programs have won the Outdoor Conference Championship in the same season.
