DeVore named an AACSB ‘Influential Leader’

Susan DeVore, a UNC Charlotte alumna and trustee, is among the inaugural group of “Influential Leaders” named by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the global accrediting body and membership association for business schools.

Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett, author of “Carolina Israelite: How Harry Golden Made Us Care About Jews, the South and Civil Rights,” will speak at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the Atkins Library Halton Reading Room.

Collegiate Recovery Community to host recovery week events

Every September National Recovery Month is observed to educate Americans that with treatment those with a mental or substance use disorder can live a healthy and rewarding life. Recovery Month celebrates the progress made by those in recovery.

The theme for Recovery Month 2015 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable! It focuses on the value of peer support in educating, mentoring and helping others. This theme invites individuals in recovery and their support systems to be catalysts for change in communities.

Inaugural Silent Witness unveiling to raise awareness of domestic violence

The unveiling of the inaugural Silent Witness display will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Student Union Rotunda. Using life-size figures, Silent Witness enables individuals to visualize victims of domestic violence.

The Dean of Students Office is seeking two student speakers and two bell ringers for UNC Charlotte’s December commencement ceremonies. Faculty and staff are requested to encourage students graduating in December to apply for one of these prestigious honors.

Legal affairs to hold fall symposium

The Office of Legal Affairs Fall Symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.

Six sessions are scheduled with three separate tracks in each. Topics in the tracks will focus on students, business/administration and employment.

A continental breakfast and lunch will be served; register to attend online.

Individuals who register to attend this event will receive PowerPoint presentations prior to the symposium via email.

Collegiate Recovery Community to benefit from Heroes 6K

The Heroes in Recovery 6K, sponsored by the Foundations Recovery Network, will benefit UNC Charlotte’s Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) for the second year in a row. The race will be held Sunday, Sept. 27, at University Research Park, starting at 8 a.m.

CCI professor to participate in webinar series

Eric Saule, an assistant professor in the Computer Science Department in the College of Computing and Informatics, will present the webinar “Toward Machine Oblivious Graph Analysis” at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 6. This event is part of the DataByte lunchtime webinar series sponsored by the National Consortium for Data Science (NCDS).

Saule, who also is an NCDS Fellow, will talk about his work to develop a framework for performing efficient graph analysis regardless of the type of analysis being performed or the computer system used.

CHHS researcher ‘conflicted’ with NIH blood pressure study results

While the results of new National Institutes of Health study on blood pressure management could help reduce cardiovascular disease and save lives, questions on the data and its implementation remain, according to one UNC Charlotte expert.

The NIH research found targeting a lower blood pressure than previously recommended in high risk patients ages 50 and up led to a significant drop in cardiovascular events and stroke, and reduced the risk of death by a quarter.
