Legal affairs to hold fall symposium
The Office of Legal Affairs Fall Symposium will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 15, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center Salons.
Six sessions are scheduled with three separate tracks in each. Topics in the tracks will focus on students, business/administration and employment.
A continental breakfast and lunch will be served; register to attend online.
Individuals who register to attend this event will receive PowerPoint presentations prior to the symposium via email.

CHHS researcher ‘conflicted’ with NIH blood pressure study results
While the results of new National Institutes of Health study on blood pressure management could help reduce cardiovascular disease and save lives, questions on the data and its implementation remain, according to one UNC Charlotte expert.
The NIH research found targeting a lower blood pressure than previously recommended in high risk patients ages 50 and up led to a significant drop in cardiovascular events and stroke, and reduced the risk of death by a quarter.

Oct. 1 Student Job and Internship Fair to offer 1,800-plus opportunities
Roughly 130 employers are expected to participate in the Student Job and Internship Fair, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center. More than 1,800 jobs and internship opportunities will be available at the event, according to fair organizers.

State budget would fund enrollment growth, one-time bonuses
The North Carolina Budget Conference Report for 2015-17 will fully fund enrollment growth for UNC campuses and provide a one-time bonus of $750 for all permanent state employees. However, the overall UNC system faces an $18 million reduction for the 2015-16 fiscal year, or approximately $1 million for UNC Charlotte.
The budget, passed by the Senate, is scheduled for a vote in the House of Representatives on Thursday.
For UNC Charlotte, enrollment growth funding will be $18 million for fiscal year 2015-16 and $4.5 million for 2016-17.

Beth Whitaker, an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, is one of five finalists for the 2015 Bank of America Award for Teaching Excellence.

The ADA at 25 – more doors opened, more work to accomplish
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA); its passage enacted federally mandated, wide-sweeping changes in employment, transportation, communication and education, especially at the post-secondary level.
Gena Smith, director of disability services at UNC Charlotte, considers the ADA the broadest civil rights legislation of the 20th century.

CHHS professor to discuss aftermath of ankle injuries on Sept. 17 ‘Live Wire’
Tricia Turner, an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology, will be a guest on the Sept. 17 edition of “The Live Wire,” Inside UNC Charlotte’s streaming webcast. Starting at 2 p.m., Thursday, she will discuss how ankle injuries, even “long-healed” ones, can change a person’s movement.

Faces – Julie Howell
Julie Howell really likes calling North Carolina home, so much so, that she sought the opportunity to settle in the Tar Heel State about 16 years ago.
A native of Olathe, Kan., Howell retired from the telecommunications industry after a 26-year career in which she lived in several large cities.
