Career Center to hold annual Majors Day
The University Career Center’s annual Majors Day, scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 17, is an opportunity for students to explore all of their academic options, including majors, minors, concentrations and certificates.
Representatives from all of the University’s colleges and departments will be at Majors Day to talk with students about their respective programs. The event will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cone University Center Lucas Room.
LaDuke named 2013 Kulwicki Scholar
The Lee College of Engineering has awarded its Alan Kulwicki Memorial Scholarship to Justin LaDuke. A formal presentation will be made Friday, Oct. 11, at Charlotte Motor Speedway prior to the Dollar General 300 NASCAR Nationwide Series race.
Internal audit promotes cyber security awareness
October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the Internal Audit Department notes that everyone has a role to play in cyber security.
Cyber Security Awareness month is an opportunity to engage University stakeholders, as well as the general public, about the need to create a safe, secure and resilient cyber environment, said Tom York, director of internal audit. Constantly evolving cyber threats require the engagement of the entire nation — from government and law enforcement to the private sector and most importantly, the public.
Rollins named director of financial aid
Elizabeth Rollins recently joined UNC Charlotte as the director of financial aid. She brings more than 20 years of experience in the field of higher education financial aid.
In undertaking this role, Rollins plans to streamline financial aid processes within the office, and she said she plans to implement a “more holistic approach to customer service, ensuring the financial aid staff provides a positive experience during every meeting with students and/or parents.”
University to host Carolina Conference on Queer Youth
The Multicultural Resource Center and Time Out Youth are joining forces to host the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth. This free, public event will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, in the Student Union.
A first-of-its-kind event for the state, the Carolina Conference on Queer Youth will unite college students, high school and middle school students, teachers, counselors and other practitioners who work with the LGBTQ community to start conversations about how to increase visibility in the community, said organizers.
Former Gov. Jim Hunt speaks on educational leadership
Former Gov. Jim Hunt recently discussed the significance of investing in public education to North Carolina economic future in his remarks as part of the Distinguished Speaker Series. He was on campus to attend a dedication ceremony for Hunt Hall, the first suite option in the new South Village residential area. It is named in honor of the former governor.
University counsel to talk guns on Oct. 8 ‘Live Wire’
Dave Broome, vice chancellor for legal affairs and general counsel, will discuss the recent state law that allows conceal-carry guns on college campuses and how University policy has been updated accordingly on the Oct. 8 edition of Inside UNC Charlotte’s “The Live Wire.” Employees can watch the webcast at their desk or on their mobile device starting at 2 p.m. on Inside UNC Charlotte. CRI Deck 1 receives Award of Merit
The CRI Deck 1, the University’s largest single parking structure, received an Award of Merit from the Carolinas Parking Association Awards of Excellence competition.
The first four-bay deck on campus, the CRI Deck 1 has 1,343 parking spaces. Features include induction lighting, white-stained ceilings, integrated bicycle lockers, RFID-operated gates, a bus pull-off area and visitor parking with two pay-on-foot kiosks. It also is pre-wired to accommodate electric vehicle chargers.
CNN’s Toobin to talk ‘Politics, Media and the Law’ for Chancellor’s Speaker Series
Jeffrey Toobin, senior analyst for CNN, will be the featured guest for the third annual Chancellor’s Speaker Series, scheduled for 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, at UNC Charlotte Center City.
