Nominations sought for 2019 International Women’s Day
UNC Charlotte will hold its International Women’s Day reception from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Thursday, March 28, in the Popp Martin Student Union Multipurpose Room.
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women while also making a call to action for accelerating gender balance. It is recognized by the United Nations and has been celebrated annually since 1911.
Dalton Tower stairwell closure extended
Stairwell no. 3 that provides access to the Atkins Library’s Dalton Tower will be through Wednesday, Feb. 20. This temporary closure is to install a new HVAC unit as part of the Atkins Library Special Collections project.
Signage will direct patrons to use Stairwell no. 4.

‘The Rise of Populism in Europe’ to conclude Great Decisions
Imdat Ozen, a lecturer in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, will discuss “The Rise of Populism in Europe” as the final speaker of the 2019 Great Decisions Lecture Series. This free, public presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 25, at Charlotte Country Day School.
UNC Charlotte hosted second annual Southeastern Digital Learning Forum
More than 200 people from 33 different colleges and universities across the region recently gathered at UNC Charlotte Center City to learn how to leverage digital classroom technologies for student success.
For some attendees, the second annual Southeastern Digital Learning Forum presented an opportunity to learn more about adaptive learning and how it is having an impact on student learning.
University to offer nation’s first online master’s degree in urban education
The 33-hour Master of Education in Urban Education is designed to prepare educators and professionals to deliver high-quality, culturally relevant instruction and services for students in increasingly diverse, urban school systems and communities across the United States.
Taylor needs shared leave
Brittanae Taylor, Office of Disability Services, needs shared leave donations. The Benefits Office will accept donations through Feb. 18.
To contribute leave, faculty and staff should refer to the requirements and participant forms in Personnel Information Memorandum (PIM) 29 or in the literature racks outside of the Benefits Office, King Building, Room 207. Atkins Library to host Diversity Day 2019
UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library will host Diversity Day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 28. This event, sponsored by the library’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, will explore the relationship between diversity and inclusion, the form it takes in the workplace and what inclusion looks like from all sides.
Organizers noted the goal is to help groups and businesses achieve a work environment in which all individuals are treated fairly and respectfully, have equal access to opportunities and resources and can contribute fully to the organization’s success.
Global studies professor to present ‘The Middle East: Regional Disorder’
Amal Khoury, an assistant professor in the Department of Global Studies, will present “The Middle East: Regional Disorder” as part of the 2019 Great Decisions Lecture Series. This free, public presentation is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13, at the International House, 1817 Central Ave.
International speaker to discuss engaging students to become innovators
Annette Schavan, former federal minister of education and research in Germany, will present “Engaging Students to be Catalysts for Innovation” at 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 14, in the Popp Martin Student Union, Multipurpose Room.
Schavan, who also served as the German ambassador to the Holy See (Vatican), is a former member of the German-Federal Parliament. She spent much of her political and professional life in the German state of Baden-Wurttemberg, a center for many of the country’s mid-sized companies, including Daimler AG, Porsche, Bosch, Zeiss and Zap.

The BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program offers UNC Charlotte female faculty and staff members the opportunity to develop and strengthen their leadership skills, knowledge and networking to be successful change agents in their communities.
