Retirement reception scheduled for Ruth Burnett
Ruth Burnett, associate director for the Office of Technology Transfer, is retiring from the University after 18 years of service.
A retirement reception is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, in the atrium of the PORTAL Building. Light refreshments will be served.

Sealed Air partners with University on Innovation Lab and consumer research
Fortune 500 company Sealed Air Corporation recently opened its research and design lab inside UNC Charlotte’s PORTAL Building to provide a look at the future of packaging.
Sealed Air is awaiting completion of its new headquarters in south Charlotte; until then, the company set up a temporary Innovation Lab on the first floor of PORTAL. The company’s R&D employees are focused on applications engineering and new developments for Instapak and Korrvu, two new Sealed Air packaging products.
UNC Charlotte to host ‘STEM Matters’ research conference
The North Carolina Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (NC-LSAMP) will hold its 2016 annual undergraduate research conference at UNC Charlotte on Friday, Oct. 14.
Yokohama Tire becoming newest PORTALpartner
Yokohama Tire Corporation has announced plans to locate a research and development center in Concord’s International Business Park. Until that facility is ready, the company will house up to 22 workers on UNC Charlotte’s campus in the PORTAL Building.

UNC Charlotte virtual hackathon to promote economic mobility
Technology can be a force to improve various aspects of a community, and UNC Charlotte is issuing a public challenge for developers to create applications or games to advance a social good.
The UNC Charlotte Data Science Initiative, through its Partnership for Social Good, is sponsoring a virtual hackathon to address economic mobility in the Queen City. Participants will compete for $10,000 in prizes, and their challenge is to create a mobile platform-based application or game that addresses this problem:

UNC Charlotte’s Women + Girls Research Alliance is featured as a case study in a new work on the practice of community-based research.
“Community-based Qualitative Research: Approaches for Education and the Social Sciences” was published by SAGE Publications; it was authored by Laura Ruth Johnson, associate professor, Department of Educational Technology, Research and Assessment, College of Education, Northern Illinois University.
