New certificate program for early childhood mental health
The School of Social Work and Department of Special Education and Child Development announce the approval of a joint certificate program in early childhood mental health (ECMH). This program, which requires 15 graduate hours, focuses on children birth to five years of age and their families.
Graduates of the certificate program will be able to:
27 finalists competing at 15th annual Charlotte Venture Challenge
The 15th annual Charlotte Venture Challenge, which will be held, Tuesday, April 19, at the North Carolina Research Campus, will showcase 27 startup finalists to investors, corporate innovation executives and the business community.
In addition to presentations by the startups, Chis Heivly, cofounder of MapQuest, will deliver a keynote presentation, and there will be updates from alumni who participated in past challenges. Register to attend this year’s celebration online.
Exceptional role models recognized at International Women’s Day
Offering odes to strong women who inspired them was a common thread by speakers at the recent International Women’s Day program held in the Student Union Multipurpose Room.
An annual event, International Women’s Day “acknowledges that our campus community is filled with local women who embody the richness of internationalism, and we would like to recognize these individuals for their contributions to UNC Charlotte and the world,” said Roslyn Lewis, communications coordinator in the Office of International Programs.
Campus entrance to shine blue for autism awareness
April is Autism Awareness Month, and in commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day April 2, UNC Charlotte’s Dickson Gate, the campus’s main entrance, will be lighted blue as part of a global event to raise awareness of autism and celebrate individuals with autism for their unique talents and gifts.
Thousands of iconic landmarks, communities, businesses and homes across the globe united by shining bright blue lights in honor of the millions of individuals and families around the world with autism.
Senior recognition of faculty and staff still going strong
Now in its third year at UNC Charlotte, the “Thank You Card” recognition program continues to grow in size and impact. Beginning in 2013, Chancellor Philip L. Dubois sent 631 thank you cards to members of UNC Charlotte’s faculty and staff who were nominated by graduating seniors on the 2012-13 Senior Survey.
Earlier this year, 721 faculty and staff members received thank you cards.
Economic mobility focus of Women + Girls Research Alliance Summit
For the majority of girls born into poverty in the Charlotte region, they will have a harder time breaking out of that economic state. UNC Charlotte’s Women + Girls Research Alliance (W+GRA) is bringing researchers and the community together to explore improving economic mobility opportunities for women as the focus of its 2016 W+GRA Summit.
A day-and-a-half event, the 2016 W+GRA Summit will be Thursday and Friday, April 14-15. Registration is through April 8; space is limited.

Career Center to hold annual Education Fair
The University’s annual Education Career Fair, scheduled for Friday, April 8, will offer education students, alumni and the public an opportunity to connect with schools/school districts and other education-related organizations.
The fair will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Barnhardt Student Activity Center; it will bring representatives from more than 80 schools/school districts to campus.
Enrollment management receives national micro-grant to fund pilot program
UNC Charlotte is one of nine institutions to receive a $50,000 national micro-grant to fund a pilot program to prevent low-income college students from dropping out prior to graduation.
The Association of Public Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities (USU) awarded $450,000 to nine public urban research institutions. Each college received $50,000.
Spring commencement fair scheduled
Barnes & Noble at UNC Charlotte, located in the Student Union, will host the Commencement Fair Tuesday, March 22, through Thursday, March 24.
Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., seniors who will graduate in May will have the chance to pick up their caps and gowns, obtain tickets for commencement and shop for commencement-related items and alumni merchandise. Representatives from Balfour and Herff Jones (rings, custom invitations) and Grad Images photography will be in attendance, too.
